I decided to wash the car today. It needed it.

Over night we had a ice storm. School was cancelled.

Jan 17, Wednesday
Today I had the first two of my exams. They were Algebra II and English. Because of the exams we had a short day.
I wrote a letter to Peggy. I think she'll write me back. I showed her that she had no reason not to write, except not enough time.
They have ten minute breaks between exams. One for the Bottom floor and one for the top floor. Since Mr Black has to help with the refreshment stands we got out both breaks.
They sold candy bars, soft drinks and doughnuts.

Jan 18, Thursday
I had the second two of my exams today. They were P.E. and History. I brought a chess set to school and after the history exam I played. I thought I was playing one person but I ended up playing three people. I played a bad game and they somehow got a draw.
I got to stay out both breaks again because of P.E.

Jan 19, Friday
I had the last three of my exams today. They were Chemistry and Typing. When I got home I decided to wash the car.
Today was the end of the third six-weeks and also the end of the first semester
I went to the basketball game. We one all three games: the B-team, the Girls, and the boys. It was the first time this school year that our boys and girls had both won.

Jan 20, Saturday
I waxed the car. It didn't make it look too much better since I had just washed it yesterday.
I went to go see Glenn Hills play Richmond. It was the first away game I had seen this school year. Both our boys and girls won. That made two days straight that our boys and girls had both won, that was unusual.

Jan 22, Monday
It was the start of Spirit Week. They sold Glenn Hills posters and of course I bought one. I couldn't find room in my room to put it so I put it in the den.
Scouts.

We had a free day in typing. We had no certain assignment. I did practically nothing.

Jan 31, Wednesday
Mr. Brown told us that we have to do a term paper. He's going to put the ideals from the term papers together and make a book.
Our topic, statement of objectives and a list of 3 books (bib.) are due Tuesday, Feb 6, 1973.
Our first chapter (see ex. Research Paper) is due Tuesday, Feb 13, 1973.
The second chapter is due Tuesday, Feb 20, 1973.
The third chapter is due Tuesday, Feb 27, 1973.
The final draft is due Tuesday, March 6, 1973.

Feb 1, Thursday
Mr. Brown said that everyone who has to do a Science project doesn't have to do their Term papers this six-weeks. They can do them next six-weeks instead. There is only about two people in our history class that are doing Science Projects. Before lunch I had told him it would be hard to do a Science Project and a Term paper at the same time. After lunch is when he told us that we could do ours later.

Feb 2, Friday
Our progress reports were due in Chemistry. The progress reports show how much progress is made on our Science Projects.

Feb 6, Tuesday
Today I bought this book and some pen refills. It's hard to remember what happened on each day of this year, so I'm going to just have to go by what I have written down on the calendar. Some days not much happened so I didn't write anything down on the calendar. Of course I don't write much down on the calendar anyway. Like today, nothing.

Feb 7, Wednesday
Nothing really exciting happened today. Of course it is Wednesday so we went to church. I drove as usual.
This week they are collecting final payments for the annual. I paid the full amount the first time, so I don't owe anything.
Also Mr. Black has this thing called H. and R. Black. Where some of his advanced classes help students with their tax forms free of charge.

Feb 8, Thursday
There was an assembly today during first period for the Junior and Senior Classes. Since Alg. II is considered a Junior Class subject we went. It was about the draft. He told us even though they aren't drafting anyone right now, we have to register when we become 18. (A month before or a month after.) He also said that if that Women's Lib. bill [the Equal Rights Amendment] passes through congress and is made law. That women might be drafted with the men.
Mrs. Carter was absent today.

Feb 9, Friday
This morning when I went to school it was raining or at least I thought it was. I started walking to school and about halfway there it started hailing. After first period it started sleeting. At lunch time, about 11:15, it started snowing. At the beginning of 5th period they said that anyone who had a ride home or drove could go home. They wouldn't let people who walk go home. We had the radio program today. We did get out ten minutes early. It's almost 12:00 pm now and its still snowing. We have about 8 inches already. Its just beautiful. In typing we typed to music. The game against South East was cancelled. We don't have to make it up. No home-work. Mrs. Carter was absent again.
Mom gave me a Boy Scout calendar. I put it in the den.

Feb 10, Saturday
Dwight called at 1:30 a.m. Said they had no snow. It stopped snowing around 3:00 p.m. We ended up with about 14 inches of snow.
It broke a record set back in 1914 of around 11 inches. It started with rain Thursday and then turned to snow yesterday. The snow is so soft that you can't ski or walk with out sinking way in. Its suppose to freeze over tonight, which should make the snow harder and better. Ronnie and I were going to go clean the church, but Grandmother called and said that church was cancelled. Almost everything was closed because of all the snow in the roads.

Feb 11, Sunday
There was no church today. The sun came out and started melting the snow. Mom, Mrs. Linaweaver, and I went to Grandmother's today. I got to drive. The roads had a lot of snow and ice on them but, they were passable. Little Stupid left early this morning about 7 and we couldn't find her till she came back at about 10 pm. There is no school tomorrow. We built a few small snowmen. It's supposed to freeze over tonight and that's why the cancelled school. Not too much of it has melted Mom made some brownies.

Feb 12, Monday
School was not open today. Over night we had a freeze. It got down to 9º, a new low temperature breaking a record set in 1968. I went skiing all over today. It was a good day for it. Jesse, Juan, and I went down the interstate that they're building to a pond in a sand pit. I had found out about it earlier on skis. The ice cracked and I fell in a couple times. So did Juan. The last time Jesse saw the ice crack a little and ran off causing the ice to crack more. Juan and I fell through the ice.
We went swimming at scouts. Mom wouldn't let me drive.
We got a letter from Dwight. I got one from him too. School has been cancelled for tomorrow.

Feb 13, Tuesday
There was no school today. There will be school tomorrow. Mom and I went looking for a valentine gifts. We found this place called Village Hallmark Haus. All they sell is things made by Hallmark Cards Inc. They have cards for everything.
Mom received a big record assortment in the mail or should I say a record group called Million Dollar Memories. It even has some songs between 1968-71. It doesn't have the people who I heard sing them singing them, though.

Feb 14, Valentine's Day
School started back today. Today is Valentine's Day. We were supposed to have Singing Valentines today but since we missed Monday and Tuesday no one had a chance to order which ones they wanted. It's going to be Friday. The newspaper was sold today. Since I have a subscription to it I was supposed to get one. They didn't get around to my homeroom. At lunch break I told them about it and they gave me one. I got a valentine from Peggy today. I decided I better send her one even if it got there late.
It rained today causing most of the remaining snow to melt. I went to Church as usual.

Feb 15, Thursday
Not too much happened today. The people who wanted to order singing valentines for tomorrow ordered them. I decided not to send any. Other than that nothing unusual took place today. Tomorrow should be a good day.

Feb 16, Friday
Today we had singing Valentines. It was fun listening to the people sing the Valentines. Today was also the end of a short week. I didn't receive any singing Valentines and I really didn't want any. Most of the classes went on as usual.

Feb 17, Saturday
Mom told me that we were going to Atlanta today to see Dwight. I didn't know that she had planned on going till she told me this morning. Ronnie was unavailable to go because of his homework. I drove up and back. We left at about 12:45 and got there about 2:30. We went to a place called "World Bazaar" and saw a bunch of weird things. Mom bought some candles. Then we went and ate steak. Mom talked to Dwight a lot about college. It looks like Dwight is going to drop out of Emory and go to Augusta College. Dwight wants to be a writer. We left about 8:30 and got home about 10:45.

Feb 18, Sunday
I went to church today. Peggy was there today.
Tonight I started writing a letter to Peggy. I'll have to finish it and sent it off tomorrow. I would have been able to write the whole thing today but we went to Sears and got some things and got groceries. On the way back we stopped and visited the Linton's. Robert came with me when I came home. I couldn't get much typing done till he left about 10 or 11.

Feb 19, Monday
We went swimming again in scouts. We had a lot of fun. Next week we aren't going swimming. We are going to get things straightened out with the new boys coming in. I still wasn't able to finish my letter to Peggy.
I won't be able to go to Church Wednesday, because Mom has to go to a P.T.A. meeting. I think I will go to the Junior-Senior Basketball game.

Feb 20, Tuesday
We have double periods today and tomorrow. Today we had 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Tomorrow we have 2nd, 4th, and 6th. We have book reports due tomorrow. In history we are going to the Augusta Library. We had two hours of lab today in Chemistry.
I finished my letter to Peggy today and sent it off. I also stopped by Roses and picked up a Bic Clic, a record book, and a package of paper reinforcements.

Feb 21, Wednesday
We had double periods again today. We had 2nd, 4th, and 6th. We had book reports today. We could do it oral or write it and turn it in. I did mine orally. In history (4th) we had a field trip. We went to the Augusta Library. We ate at Burger King. I got back just in time to get a ticket to the basketball game. In typing Mr. Holms wasn't there. Mr. Howell gave us a bunch of speed tests.
The Junior-Senior Basketball game was tonight. the Junior girls won. the boys lost by 2 points. The combined teams of the Junior-Senior game played the teachers. The teachers won. I didn't go to church. Mom went to a P.T.A. meeting.

Feb 22, Thursday
We had a test in Algebra II today. I don't think anyone in our class finished it. We had a test in History today too. I didn't do too well on it. In Chemistry we saw a movie.
There is a lecture going to be given by our church on March 1st. That means that I won't be able to go to the "Miss Spring Blossom Contest".

Feb 23, Friday
In English we wrote letters to the POWs while the students that didn't do their book reports oral, Wednesday, did theirs written.
I received a letter from Peggy today. It was very interesting. She mentioned an interesting problem.
We went Bowling tonight. that is Jerry, Ronnie, Jesse, Robert and I went bowling. The first game I didn't do so bad. I bowled a 154 and came in second, one pin behind Jerry. The second game I bowled a 114. The last game I bowled a 100. I hadn't bowled in over two months.

Feb 24, Saturday
We had pancakes for breakfast. The first breakfast I've had in a long time.
We got out the Ping-Pong Table and played some. We had four players so we played some doubles, too.
We spread around some circulars in the South Gate parking lot. They were for the lecture on March 1st, which will stop me from going to the "Miss Spring Blossom Contest".
We had to replace a light bulb in each of the two outside the Church. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Boyd dropped by to see how we were doing. We ate at a new Chinese place that has opened up where Curry's Bar-B-Q was. I don't exactly care for Chinese food.
Boyd recommended the place.

Feb 25, Sunday
We went to Church as usual. There weren't too many people at Sunday school today. There was Eileen and Ronnie in the Senior class; Jon and I in our class; and Jody and someone else in the other class. Marlene already graduated from Sunday School.
We went to the Smorgasbord at Glenn Hills. It was good.
Marlene, Ronnie and I went and delivered circulars at K-Mart. It took us an hour.
The Masters Golf Tournament is going to be the first week in April. Good Friday is April 20th.

Feb 26, Monday
We had a make up test in Alg II. Nobody finished the last one.
I sent off a letter to Peggy this morning. It was in answer to the letter I got from her Friday.
There was scouts tonight. There is a Spring Camporee in two weeks.

Feb 27, Tuesday
We had a take home test due in History. I didn't finish it.
I went to baseball practice today. We mainly just exercised our muscles.
It's now past two o'clock A.M. I have been staying up doing my overdue lab reports. I'm all caught up except for the Science project.
If I start going to baseball practice, I might have to do my homework.
Today has been a pretty good day.

Feb 28, Wednesday
I handed in the lab report that I did last night. In typing we had a test I didn't get finished.
I went to baseball practice again today. Terry Ford wasn't there today. We did the same things we did yesterday. Since I started going to baseball practice yesterday, I have more of a desire to do my homework.
I went to church as usual tonight. A lot of people gave testimonies.
Tomorrow night is the lecture.

Feb 29
I went to baseball practice again today. It lasted a little longer today, till about 5:30
We had the lecture tonight. I talked to Peggy a little. She gave me a letter she wrote to me today at school. When I got home and finished reading her letter I wrote one to her.
No such date this year.

Mar 1, Thursday
I went to baseball practice again today. It lasted a little longer today than it did yesterday probably because Terry Ford wasn't there yesterday. It lasted until 5:30 today.
The lecture was tonight. It was a very good lecture. It hit on some of my feelings about people. I talked to Peggy a little. She gave me a letter she wrote (typed) to me at school. When I got home and finished reading it, I wrote her one. I just finished it.
Don't ask me why I started writing on the other page. [Feb 29]
I am going to watch the Harlem Globetrotters tomorrow night.

Mar 2, Friday
I had three tests today: one in English, one in P.E., and one in History. We also had a pop test in Chemistry. The test in English I had forgotten about it. I thought that it was just another test. I found out this morning it was going to be a six weeks test with Literature.
There was no baseball practice today so mom and I went looking for some baseball shoes for me. I got a good pair after going in several stores. While looking for them we went in Roses. I bought a good record called "I Can See Clearly Now".
Robert and I went and saw the Harlem Globetrotters. I bought a pennant for my wall. It was a funny game. I got four wheat backs in my change from Roses. One was a 1919S, another a 1945, a 1946, and a 1951D.

Mar 3, Saturday
We went and cleaned the church today as usual.
Al Blanchard came over and played ping-pong today. Jesse was here, too. I lost the first game against Al, but I won all the rest of the games I played him. I dug a big hole for mom to put her roses in. Jesse and I ran around the block. While we were going around, Robert jumped on the table trying a ball and of course tore up the table. Jesse, Robert, and I played Stock Market. I won like I usually do.
Peggy should have gotten my letter today.

Mar 4, Sunday
I went to church as usual today. Tonight we listened to the lecture over WGAC. It didn't come in too good. After church we went to Hornes and ate lunch.
We transplanted the roses. That is, we transplanted the four in the front row in the flower bed outside my window that mom wanted transplanted. We put them in the hole I made yesterday. We put marble chips all around them and pansies, too. My record got a couple of scratches when the candle fell on it. It still plays alright.

Mar 5, Monday

Today is the beginning of a new six-weeks. We had baseball practice today. We spent the first pat of the practice trying to get rid of the puddles of water that gathered around home plate. We had a hard practice though.
We had scouts tonight as usual.

Mar 6, Tuesday
There was no baseball practice today. It rained almost all morning.
We took around report cards today. I didn't think I was going to do too well and I didn't do too well either. I'll write down the grades tomorrow if I can remember to.
I started on my Science Project today. I don't know if I will be able to finish it or not. It is due Thursday.
Tomorrow will be a busy day. I hope I will have time to remember to write something down.

Mar 7, Wednesday
As far as I know there was no baseball practice today. (There was practice I found out.)
I got rest of the things I needed for my Science Project. I also finished it. With the help of mom I have two posters. I did the drawing; she did the writing. It's ready for tomorrow.
We got report cards today.
Here are the grades
Algebra II   A    5
Chemistry   C+  5
English       B    5
Typing        C+  5
P.E.            B    5
Conduct     A
Mrs. Carter wrote a comment on it. She said, "If Craig would turn in lab reports on time he would make much higher grades in Chemistry. H. Carter"

Mar 8, Thursday
Today in English Mrs. Jennings came to talk to me about making out our schedule for next year. I plan to take English, Sr. Math, Physics, History, P.E. and Study Hall. I'm not sure if that's what I'm taking or not.
After school I went and set up my Science Project. After that I went to baseball practice in the new gym. We won't have practice tomorrow. Terry Ford has to go back Tuesday.
I went to the Science Fair tonight. There were some good projects there. In the mail today we got the 73 Brit. [Encyclopedia Britannica] year-book. An advertisement for a Handy Man's Encyclopedia was in it. I sent for the first free volume.

Mar 9, Friday
Mrs. Carter left during first period today. We didn't have any baseball practice today. I learned that Coach Watson is coming out Wednesday and cut the team.
I went to the football jamboree tonight. The teams in it were Butler, Glenn Hills, Richmond, and Westside. Glenn Hills won one and lost two. We beat Westside.
On the way back, we stopped by Roses. I bought a small record for 78 cents. The side I bought it for has Dancing in the Moonlight it.

Mar 10, Saturday
I didn't do much today. The Walk-A-Thon was today. I didn't go. I should have started on my term paper, but I didn't.
I noticed some blossoms on the peach tree today. Maybe we will have some peaches this year. I hope we will have some.
We got a letter from Dwight today. He sounded like he was looking forward to coming home next Saturday.
We cleaned the church as usual. This young guy is going to sub. for Eileen tomorrow we found out.

Mar 11, Sunday
I went to Sunday School and Church as usual today. Peggy was there today.
We went to a lecture today in Saluda, South Carolina. It's not quite 50 miles. They didn't have room for me upstairs with everyone else, so Robert and I stayed down stairs and listened through the speakers. It wasn't as good a lecture as the one we had. I started working on the first chapter of my term paper tonight. It is due Tuesday.

Mar 12, Monday
We had baseball practice today. It was ok.
Mrs. Foreman wasn't here today. We are going to start playing Golf in P.E. Fourth period I went and handed in my schedule for next year to Mrs. Jennings. I am taking English III, Physics, Sr. Math (adv. alg. and trig), American Government, P.E., and Study Hall. It shouldn't be too hard.
Tonight I finished up the first chapter of my term paper. Tonight I went to see a movie at church. it was trying to get people to think about becoming Christian Science Practitioners.
They had posted in the student center how much everyone had to pay on their rings. I owe $46.63 more on my ring. It said that they were going to be shipped March 23.

Mar 13, Tuesday
We had baseball practice again today. First we met in the gym and he gave us a schedule. Then we went out on the field and played. He will make the cut Wednesday or Thursday.
Mrs. Foreman was absent again today. Today in P.E. we learned what the clubs should look like and how much they cost.
I handed in chapter one of my history term paper. I didn't do any of my homework tonight. I don't know why I just didn't. I don't know if I should go to pick up Dwight or go on a campout this weekend.

Mar 14, Wednesday
We had baseball practice today again. There was a lot of people there today. There was about 50 people. He is going to post the people who make it tomorrow. He will probably pick the people who he knows best. Like the football players who are going out. I don't think he is going to pick me.
Today is Wednesday so I went to church as usual. I have been tired all day long. After church I felt good. There is a play at Glenn Hills tomorrow night. I think I will go to see it. It only costs 25 cents for students. In school today I didn't care if I made the baseball team or not. In fact I was thinking that if I made it, it might not give me much leisure time. I still feel that way.

Mar 15, Thursday
I didn't make the cut. I didn't think I would make it since he didn't even have my name on the list of the people who went out.
I went to the Widow's Plight. It was good. I bought a ticket during school. It only cost 25 cents. Before it started Delores Sanchez and Bedrock played. They were good too.
We got a letter from Dwight today. He said that he thought that his last exam was Saturday, but that he found out that it was Monday. We will pick him up Monday instead of Saturday.

Mar 16, Friday
We had the radio program today. I always enjoy it. It just makes my day so much brighter.
Right after school today, I went down to see the Science Fair at the Bell Auditorium. A guy from Glenn Hills, Ronald Williams, won a grand prize along with a [missing word] from Westside. They will both be going to California in May. Mr. Black is Ronald's sponsor. They will both get an all expense paid trip.
I went on the Boy Scout campout today. We went to Mr. Hamlin's place. He has a lot of woods he owns. I brought some cards, a chess set, and my little radio along with me.

Mar 17, Saturday
When we woke it [up] this morning it was cold. It rained during the night and we had some leaks in the tent. We had our own running water. The strong wind must have brought in the cold and took out the rain. We took the patrols tracking. They were alright. During the afternoon there was a fire not to [too] far from where we were camping (about a half-mile to a mile away). We couldn't see it from where we were camping. The firemen had it out, but we moved into Mr. Hamlin's [Hanalin's?] back yard just in case. We had to move the whole camp. It was suppose to get down to freezing tonight so mom brought me my jacket and a blanket. She also gave me a letter from Peggy. I was glad to get it. I had a feeling if I went on the campout I would get a letter. I made arrangements to leave early tomorrow.

Mar 18, Sunday
Mom came and picked me up at 7:30 this morning so I could go to church. Peggy didn't come today, but I did go in with the Senior class today. We still haven't got paid this month. I am going to get out early tomorrow from school, so I can go with Ronnie and Mom to pick up Dwight in Atlanta. As you can see I have been doing all my makeup [in this diary] for the weekend. I did the last part of Thursday, all of Friday, all of Saturday, and of course Sunday.
Dwight just called from Atlanta. He wanted to find out when we would pick him up.

Mar 19, Monday
We are going on a field trip in P.E. tomorrow. We are going to 7-Lakes and hit a bucket of balls. I got out of school early today so I could go with mom and Ronnie to pick up Dwight. I got out at 1:30 pm. I only missed typing. Ronnie drove up to Atlanta and I drove home. We went up there picked up Dwight, went over to the World Bazaar, where mom bought some things and came home. On the way home we were worrying about running out of gas so we went off the road a little ways and got gas. Ronnie registered, Dwight wasn't able to . We ate at the Sizzler tonight. Boyd came over and talked with Dwight. We got a student teacher in P.E.

Mar 20, Tuesday
We went on a field trip in P.E. to 7-Lakes golf course. We had a lot of fun. Afterwards we stopped and eat [ate] at Burger King. We had lab in Chemistry. Dwight and I cleaned up the room tonight. It looks a little better now. We had double periods today. We will have them again tomorrow. Tomorrow we are going to go bowling in History for our field trip. At least I think we are going to go there. Next week we are going to have company, I think. We should get our rings Friday.

Mar 21, Wednesday
We went on a field trip in History to the bowling alley at Ft. Gordon. When we got there it was closed for resurfacing, so I showed them how to get to Bowling Center #2. They had a league but we were able to bowl. I didn't bowl too good. I bowled a 114 and an 88. I don't know how I bowled so bad, but I did. I did chapter II of my History report which is due tomorrow. Since today is Wednesday, we went to church tonight. We took a soldier back to Ft. Gordon.

Mar 22, Thursday
I handed in my Chapter II of the History report today. We got another student teacher in Algebra II. Dwight and I went looking around to find good records. We didn't find any we liked. I did buy a book though. The name of it is B.C. Strikes Back. is a funny book about cavemen in cartoon style.
We have an assembly tomorrow during 2nd period. Also we get our rings tomorrow. I owe 46.63 which I have to pay tomorrow. I will have paid 56.63 altogether. They will be worth it though.

Mar 23, Friday
We had an assembly 2nd period today. It was for the campaign speeches of the people running for student council officers next year. A lot of people got out after they got their rings. Others got out early and came back and got their rings and left. I stayed the whole day. We got our rings like I said. I paid the balance on mine which was 46.63. We went and played Putt-Putt tonight. I wrote a letter to Peggy today, but I wasn't able to send it off in time, so I'll give it to her Sunday if she is there.

Mar 24, Saturday
I didn't do too much today. I just hung around the house most of the day and did nothing. Of course Ronnie and I did go down and clean the church. Eileen was there while we were there and we did talk to her a little. I went and got our supper from McDonalds tonight so we would have time to go to the movie. We went and saw Save the Tiger. There were seven of us: Jerry, Terry, Jesse, Charles, Dwight, Ronnie, and me. The movie was ok, but I've seen better ones before.

Mar 25, Sunday
Since today is Sunday we went to church. Peggy was there so I gave her my letter. I showed her my ring. I think she liked it. She told me that I was wearing it wrong. I'm supposed to wear it like she told me till I graduate. We went bowling tonight. I didn't bowl too good. I bowled a 135 and two games under a 100. We bowled at the Masters bowling lanes. I had a few problems with the ball. We went and ate at Shoney's (Big Boy) tonight. It was pretty good. It was Mr. Linton's birthday, so we ate a birthday cake, too.

Mar 26, Monday
Today is the beginning of another week of school. After school today I went to a baseball game. We played Louisville. We played at home and it cost 50 cents to go see the game. They were supposed to play seven innings, but they only played six because of the score. We won14 to one. The run they scored was unearned. They only had three hits and that was off the pitcher who didn't allow any runs. It was the first game so we started off good. I went to scouts tonight since it is Monday.

Mar 27, Tuesday
Today was just another day. Nothing really happened today. In P.E. we did have a contest to see who could hit the ball the farthest. We had three groups. I won in my group. I also won against the others who had won. I won three out of four of the balls and came in third (last) on the other. I wasn't expecting to win, but I had some pretty good drives and I didn't win by much. Mrs. Foreman gave us some more words today bringing the total to 95 for yesterday and today. I did them all tonight, except for 4 or 5 I did in class.

Mar 28, Wednesday
During 6th period today we had a fire drill. It wasn't really what I expected. I'm not use to having interference while I'm typing. We don't get any extra time to type what we're supposed to because of the delay. After school today I went to Evans to watch a baseball game. Jesse and his brother came along. We made a lot of errors and bad plays. We lost 13 to 3. we scored all 3 runs in the 7th inning, which is the last inning. When the game ended we had the bases loaded. Since today is Wednesday, I went to Church.

Mar 29, Thursday
Today was a pretty good day. It rained today. It didn't rain hard, though. It was just a steady drizzle. Mrs. Carter went to Atlanta to a teachers meeting. She will be gone tomorrow, too. We had Mr. Holmes as a substitute. Tomorrow is Sadie Hawkin's day at Glenn Hills. We have a pep-rally during 6th period tomorrow. In the paper tonight it said that Glenn Hills only lost 12 to 3 instead of 13 to 3. All the baseball players said it was 13 to 3 like I thought it was. The paper only said we made 3 errors, too.

Mar 30, Friday
Today was Sadie Hawkins day at Glenn Hills. Sadie Hawkins day is when the girls ask the boys instead of the boys asking the girls. No one acted much different than they usually do. Mrs. Carter was still in Atlanta. We had an assembly 6th period. It was modeled after Hee Haw. Mr. Irresistible was crowned. The baseball game was cancelled for today. We went to a movie tonight. It was called "The World's Greatest Athlete". It was a very good movie. I got a Glenn Hills newspaper today. "The W.G.A." was the best movie I have seen all year. I've only seen about 2. It was funny.

Mar 31, Saturday
Today was Saturday so we went and cleaned the church. Eileen was there. She was practicing for the hymns tomorrow.
Tomorrow is April Fool's Day. I didn't do too much else today besides that.
Tomorrow should be a pretty good day. It rain[ed] a lot today. We had some good meat tonight it tasted real good. We put all the names of the people in the troop in the record book.

Apr 1, Sunday
Since today was Sunday I went to Church. I got moved up to the Senior class. We got new teachers, too. I talked to Peggy a little. Marlene, Peggy, and I stayed in the nursery today. I went to some concert for Members of the Savannah River Plant. There weren't many people there, but they were pretty good. Jesse came over and we played cards a lot. There was Jesse, Robert, Ronnie, Dwight and me playing. We played two games of Hearts. I won the second game. I think I might stay out Tuesday and Wednesday and go to the Masters one of them. I feel I'm entitled to a few days rest.

Apr 2, Monday
Today is the start of another week. It should be a good week since today is the only day I am going to school this week. We hit real golf balls in P.E. today. It was pretty fun. I gave my oral book report in English today. We are going to have a Chemistry test tomorrow and Algebra test Wed. I will have to make them up when I get back. I also have to do a term paper in History this week. It was due tomorrow. I am also behind two lab reports. We are going to the Masters tomorrow.

Apr 3, Tuesday
I didn't go to school today. I stayed home so I could go to the Masters. It rained a little bit before we went, but after we got there, it became only a sunshower. After we had been there a little bit it stopped completely. We went about 10 am and came home about 6 pm. Dwight and I ate at McDonald's and came back in afterwards. Ronnie ate there. it cost $5.00 to get inside. After Dwight and I came back from McDonald's we watched some of them on the par 3 course. We found Ronnie around Nicholas on the regular course. Jesse came over later tonight.

Apr 4, Wednesday
I stayed home from school today. I slept most of the morning. I didn't get too much done. I mostly just stayed around the house. Dwight, Gary S., and Jerry are making a film. It's going to be really weird. They started out with chess pieces moving my themselves.
Today is Wednesday so we went to church. As I had expected, there were some people from out-of-town in Augusta to see the Masters there. There were a bunch of good testimonies.

Apr 5, Thursday
Today was an official holiday from school. Mom was lucky enough to be able to go to the "Masters" today. I finally got around to cleaning up my skiies and putting them under the house. We had a small little baseball game today. I ended up on the winning side. I didn't hit too well. I took Peggy's advice she gave me Sunday and went and saw the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". Jesse went with me. We thought that it was a very good movie. Tomorrow we are going to Atlanta to see the opening game of the season.

Apr 6, Friday
We tried to fix the faucets in the downstairs bathroom, but I don't know if we fixed it at all. I did wash the car today. It needed it. This afternoon we went to the opening game of the season for the Atlanta Braves. It was a good game. The Braves lost in the 13th inning. The score was two to one. The Braves had a chance to score in the bottom of the twelfth when they had the bases loaded with one out. They weren't able to score.

Apr 7, Saturday
It rained today and the Masters was cancelled today. It was so wet that they couldn't play. The third round will be played tomorrow and the final round will be played on Monday. It should be an exciting match to the end. A bunch of people have a shot at the green coat. Including Jack Nicholas who shot a 68 and a 77 yesterday. He's five strokes behind. I started a letter to Peggy tonight. I will finish it in the morning and give it to her tomorrow if she is there.

Apr 8, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so I went to church. We had a pretty good Sunday school class. Peggy was not at Sunday School, but she did come to church. She brought a friend, and if I remember right, his name was Bob. I found out that Marlene had kept the reading room yesterday and someone had come in and offered her four tickets to the Masters. She was pretty lucky to be there. Mom and I finished my term paper for History. It's been a pretty good day.

Apr 9, Monday
Today I started back to school. It was an ok day. Not exactly the best but not the worse either. I found out that the Algebra test I though we were going to have last Wednesday wasn't given. They talked him out of it. I'm not sure when I will have to take the Chemistry test. I am way behind in typing as I thought I would be. Someone stole my lock I found out today. Luckily all that was in there was my shoes and I found them. Also I went to scouts tonight.
Dad called tonight. Tommy Aaron won the Masters. J.C. Sneed came in second. Nicholas was tied for third with two other people.

Apr 10, Tuesday
Today was just another day of school. In homeroom, we got invitations to our junior-Senior prom. It seems funny to me that we (the junior class) would send invitations to ourselves. That's really what we are doing. I'm happy they did it though.
I went to a Glenn Hills baseball game today (Westside). It was a very good game. The score was 14 to 13. We won the game. We were never losing. It was 14 to 12 going into the 7th (they only play 7 innings) and they got a run walked in. We were able to get them out after that.
I got a Chess Life and Review today.

Apr 11, Wednesday
We had a test in Algebra today. I didn't even get finished. We had six problems and I finished four. I don't think I am going to do too good on it. I got a letter from Peggy today. She should have gotten my letter yesterday. I think I will write to her and see if I can give her some help on some of the things she wrote about. Mom and I went to the scout office to get some Wonderful World of Scouting tickets. We also got the other things the troop wanted us to get. We stopped at Sears for mom to pay the insurance on the little car. I got a ribbon for Dwight's typewriter, too. We went to Pennies and I got the parts of the scout uniform I needed. Tonight was Wednesday so we went to Church.

Apr 12, Thursday
I got back my Algebra test today. I made a 60 on it. I figured that I would have to make a 100 on my next test to get an 85 average. We went to the library today in P.E. We had speed test today in typing. I wrote a letter to Peggy today. I don't know if it will help her with any of her problems or not. It might and it might not. I hope it does. She should get my letter Saturday because I am going to send it tomorrow. I am going to see the baseball game tomorrow.

Apr 13, Friday
Today is Friday the 13th. It is the first Friday the 13th this year. It was a good day for me. We saw a movie today in P.E. I found out that I made a hundred on my history termpaper. He said that he really liked it. We saw a film strip in Chemistry again. I felt good when I got in typing class which I didn't yesterday. I have felt good all day. I went to see Glenn Hills play Josey. It was a home game. It went into two extra innings. Glenn Hills won 13 to 12. It was even better than the game Tuesday.

Apr 14, Saturday
Today is Saturday, the day we always clean the Church. We went and cleaned the Church today. Later this afternoon I found out that I had left my ring down there, so I went down and got it. Glenn Hills had a baseball game scheduled today at 2:00. We didn't get back till about 3:00 from cleaning the Church. When I went up there everyone was leaving. I found out that Laney didn't get there till 3:00. Glenn Hills had it scheduled for 2:00 and Laney had it scheduled for 3:00, but the umpires had it scheduled for 2:00, too. So Glenn Hills got a forfeit. We would have still played them when they got there, but the umpires had left already. Tomorrow I am going to Darlington so I might not get to write anything till Monday.

Apr 15, Sunday
I got up at 4 a.m. this morning. We left for the race at 5 a.m. I played chess most of the way there. I tied one and won the rest. We got there at about 10 or 11. It was in Darlington, South Carolina. It started at 1:00. Pearson won the race. I think it was the 17th annual race. A lot of other top leaders were in there near the end, but they either had car trouble or wrecked with less than 70 or 80 laps. There were 367 laps on the 1 3/8 mile track. Of the 40 cars who qualified, only 12 finished. Their prices for things were outrageous. So was the Darlington 500 or Rebel 500.

Apr 16, Monday
I had to go back to school today. I was a little tired from the race yesterday. We have double periods Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. We got our samples from Melanger today since mom had paid up what she owed on the membership dues. We got a whole bunch of stuff. It should be interesting if we ever get into the import-export business. Dwight got another vol. of the Ency. of Photo. We also got a Reader's Digest condensed book. Dwight got a refund, $100, from the Housing Dept. at Emory. Also I went to scouts tonight.

Apr 17, Tuesday
We had double periods today. I had Algebra II, P.E. and Chemistry. I had a test in Algebra II and P.E. I think that we are going to play either badmitten or ping-pong next six weeks. I hope it will be table tennis. I went to a baseball game today at Glenn Hills. We played Butler. They won. The score was 6 to 0. We got shut out. I don't think we got very many hits either. I ran 10 times around the block today which is 5 miles. I only ran 6 times Saturday (3 miles). I have English, History and Typing tomorrow for double periods.

Apr 18, Wednesday
We had double periods again today. I had English, History, and Typing. In history we saw some films. David Steward had some 8mm films but he didn't have a projector. I told him that we had one at the house, so we came over here to get it. I checked all over, but I couldn't find it. (Later I found out that it was hidden on top of a closet.) We got one from someone else, but the reels didn't fit. So we had to forget about that. I went up to the baseball game. We played Evans. We lost in the 9th inning on a ball missed by an outfielder. The run that scored got in on an error. We played at home. Our record is 4 and 5. I went to the talent show tonight. The gym was packed. The talents were good. Mom had a P.T.A. meeting so we didn't go to Church. I bought a pecan roll from Debbie today at school.

Apr 19, Thursday
We had an assembly today. It was for the new members of the National Honor Society. It was suppose to take up just first period, but it lasted a little long. Also, Mrs. Foreman, my second period teacher, is in charge of the National Honor Society. She gave us a free period when she came back. The junior high also had an assembly. By the time it was over third period was about over. We stayed in second period till their assembly was over. We did go to third period for five minutes, though. I am going to bring our projector to school, so we can see David Steward's films. I also have to stay after school to make up a test in Chemistry. Steve Cruz is coming tomorrow, so we have to pick him up at the airport. I finished the three labs I was behind on, today. It took all day. Tomorrow will also be a rush day. I received a letter from Peggy today.

Apr 20, Friday
Today was Good Friday. It is also the end of the 5th six-weeks. We got back our test in Algebra from Tuesday. I needed a 100 to make an 85 average for the six-weeks. That was because of the 60 I made a little while back. Anyway, I made a 96 which brought my average to 84. I hope he drops the lowest grade. We wrote what Easter meant to us in English. With God's help I think I did pretty good. Someone tackled me when we were playing basketball during P.E. I brought our projector to school today and we saw one of David's films. I turned in my three labs today. I wasn't able to stay after school to take the test, though, because Mrs. Carter had to go directly to Harlem. We went and picked up Steve today. He teaches in Washington D.C. Technology College. They went to a party in Aiken tonight. I didn't go to watch the baseball game at the school today. I heard we lost 3 to 0. They had the radio program today. They said they got it together in 5 or 10 minutes.

Apr 21, Saturday
Today was a pretty good day. Of course we went and cleaned the church. Dwight went with me since Ronnie had to keep the reading room. I wasn't able to go to the baseball game today. We played Richmond. We lost 3 to 1 I heard. We are 4 and 7 I think. Tonight we (Charles, Jerry, Steve, Ronnie, Dwight and I) went and played Putt-Putt. I shot a 51 and a 43. We went over to Charles house later. Tomorrow is Easter. It should be a very good day. Today was a very good day, too. Grandmother's birthday is Monday the 23rd.

Apr 22, Sunday
Today is Easter. We went to Sunday School and Church as usual. We had ten people in our class (not including the teacher). The rest of the Sunday School has a lot, too. It was my day to keep the nursery. Mrs. Granade was suppose to keep it with me, but she didn't make it to Church. Marlene stayed in there with me. Peggy and George were there, but neither their parents nor Jane were there. We went and ate at Hornes with Grandmother. I played hitting and fielding with four other guys today at the field. Steve left his afternoon. Jesse came over and played cards with us again today. Only 30 days of school left.

Apr 23, Monday
Today was the first day of the last six-weeks. We only have 29 more days. We will take around our report cards tomorrow. In History we had a guy from the Augusta Police Department (City) talk to us. Some of the students really rapped very hard at him, but in my opinion he made some good points. By the way he was a black cop, though it really doesn't matter. We finished our labs in Chemistry. After school today, I stayed and took the Chemistry test that I missed during the Masters. Another guy took it, too. I helped Mrs. Carter grade them. I made a 78 and he made a 77.
I got a card from Grandmother today and a $15 check.

Apr 24, Tuesday
We took around report cards today. I will write down the grades. Mr. Black dropped our lowest grade. That helped me out a lot. In P.E., the coach told us that we graded us one-third on our attitude. There were five things he graded our attitude on. You were graded from one to ten on each of those. I made a ten on all five. I came out with a 100 average on attitude. In history Mr. Brown gave me a four, but I got him to change it to a five. Chemistry kept me off the honor roll. During 6th period, I was called to the office. I found I had a chance to go to Boys State. I am going to go of course. It is a great honor. Only two from our school are going. I got the Practical Handyman's Encyclopedia today. I got a letter from Dad and a check for $25. I also got a letter from Peggy. I wrote a letter to Peggy today.

Apr 25, Wednesday
We got our report cards today. We are starting badmitten this six-weeks in P.E. I handed in my application for Boys' State today. It is from June 3 – 9. We had a contest in typing to see who did the best. We came in last. It rained today. I mailed my letter to Peggy this morning. I did my lab since it is due tomorrow. I went to church tonight since it is Wednesday. Here are my grades:
Algebra II    A    5
Chemistry   C+   5
English        B    5
History        B    5
Typing       C+   5
P.E.           A+   5
Conduct      A

Apr 26, Thursday
I took my report card back to school today. This morning I got up at 6 am thinking it was 7 am. When I got in the kitchen I noticed that it was only 6. We went outside in History class today. Everyone enjoyed it. I handed in my lab report today. I found out that we could have waited till tomorrow without getting anything counted off. I think it is the first time I have been early all year. Glenn Hills was suppose to have a game today, but I think it was rained out. We got passes to the Jr.-Sr. today. I don't know if I am going to go or not. I got an early birthday present today, a ping pong table. It is a real good one. Dwight and I played on it a lot tonight.

Apr 27, Friday
Today was the day of Junior-Senior. A lot of Juniors stayed out of or got out early from school today. I stayed the whole day. I did not go to the prom. I didn't have anyone to take, so I decided not to go. Even though we only had nine students in History, we still had a test. Glenn Hills played Westside today. I heard we won 4 to 1. Jesse came over and played some ping-pong today. Ronnie and Dwight went and saw a movie at Augusta College. Mom went and saw a movie, too. I got a check for $12 from Mr. Linton tonight. I have gotten $52 this week for my birthday.

Apr 28, Saturday
Today was my birthday. I had a good day. Dwight had to work in the Reading Room today. We cleaned the Church when we took Dwight down. Then we went over to Barton's Building Supply Company and got what we needed to build a food chest for the scouts. On the way home from all that (R.R., Church, Barton's), we stopped and picked up a tent, that mom purchased yesterday, at Sear's Warehouse. Oh, this morning the Tuer's called and said happy birthday. After we got home, while mom and Ronnie went to get groceries and Dwight, I cut out the boards. Then I went out and played baseball.
Mr. Brown, my history teacher, played with us. I got a triple and a sacrifice bunt. Ronnie gave me a table tennis net. Dwight gave me some official balls and promised me a paddle. We set up the tent when we got home with it. Ronnie and mom got four cots. These fit in with plenty of room to spare. Dwight is sleeping in the tent tonight. I heard we won the baseball game against Josey, either 4 to 1 or 3 to 1. I bought a watch with the money I got for my birthday.

Apr 29, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so we went to Church. In our Sunday School Class there were only five students: John, Eileen, and us three. We had ten last week. Today is the first day of Day-light savings time. We lost an hour of sleep last night. There is a lecture next week in Aiken. We are going to go to it. We ate food from Kentucky Fried Chicken today. I should have nailed the scout thing together today, but I didn't. We watched Lennie [Lanny] Watkins win the Byron Nelson Golf Classic on T.V. this afternoon. Robert brought over some firecrackers and skyrockets today. We only have 25 more days of school.

Apr 30, Monday
We had to go back to school today. This week is Senior Week. That means that rat court is Friday. I don't think I have anything to worry about though. School was tiring as usual today, but at least I knew what time it was. Only 24 more days to go till the end of school. I put together the food chest for the scouts most of the way today. Greg Klein help me varnish it. It looks pretty good. The Wonderful World of Scouting is Saturday. We had Scouts tonight. I watched the U. S. basketball team play the Soviet Union basketball team. They won by two points. They are playing 7 games. The U.S. won the first one.

May 1, Tuesday
I have an algebra test tomorrow. We are on the last chapter in our history book. We had an open book test in Chemistry today. Glenn Hills had a baseball game at Richmond today. I didn't go to it. I worked on the patrol kitchen today. I hope I will be able to finish by tomorrow. I have to put the shelf in, put the door on and put the legs on it. The hardest part will be putting the legs on it. It should look pretty good when I finish it. I play[ed] kickball with Greg Klein and his friends a little this afternoon. I heard the last pat of the Brave's baseball game tonight. They lost 9 to 6 even though Hank Aaron hit 2 home runs.

May 2, Wednesday
Today was Wednesday so we went to Church. We had a test in Algebra II today. Not too many people finished it. We only had ten problems again. Hopefully, we will be able to finish it tomorrow or she (the student teacher) won't count too much off for the ones we didn't finish. We finished our Chemistry test today. I don't know if I did good or not. Glenn Hills had a baseball game somewhere today. I didn't see it or hear anything about it. I worked some more on the food chest today. I still wasn't able to finish it.

May 3, Thursday
I found out what I made on the Algebra test I took yesterday. I made a 67. She is going to give us a few problems tomorrow to help us bring it up, but a couple more points won't help me at all. I gave my interpretation of the poem that I was assigned in English. I finished all but the legs on the food cabinet today. That thing has really caused me a lot of work. We got some nice soft rain today. Tomorrow is rat day. I don't think they will get me, at least I hope they don't. Next Friday is Field Day at Glenn Hills High School.

May 4, Friday
Today was Rat Day. We had a small pop test in Alg. Today. We didn't do much all day. Mrs. Carter wasn't there today again. Two days in a row is pretty good not to do much in Chemistry. We had an assembly or pep rally 6th period today. It was rat court. They day started out pretty good today. I was able to get by Seniors without them getting me and without walking or running fast. I went through the day like that pretty good until, during lunch, some Junior girls called some Senior girls over to get me. They got me good, including some rubber bands in my hair give to the Senior by a Junior girl. Between fourth and fifth period, I got my picture taken. I also got my picture taken when we got to Rat Court. I wasn't gotten at Rat Court though. I finished the food chest today. We took all the things we needed and took them to the fair grounds and set them up. I think it looks pretty good. Tomorrow we march in the parade.

May 5, Saturday
Today was the Wonderful World of Scouting. This morning we went and walked in the parade. I thought we were pretty good. At least we were a lot better than we were during practice. After Mr. Klein had taken the other scouts back to the church, we went to the fair grounds. The only awards they gave in marching was first place, so I don't know how we did. We got second place on the campsite. I played softball, really I just pitched and let each person hit the ball once. There were a lot of people lined up to hit. Someone broke the bat and we had to stop. I saw a bunch of people I know from school there.

May 6, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so we went to Church and Sunday School. There weren't very many in our class today. There was Peggy and us three. Someone else played the Organ today. It was a young guy we had before. I can't think of his name. We went and ate at Howard Johnson's today. We picked up Grandmother and Grandfather and went to a lecture in Aiken this afternoon. The name of it was "Riding Easy in the Harness." It was a good lecture. We played some Ping Pong today. We only have 20 more days left in this school year. Peggy said she was going to try to remember to bring her annual next week when I asked her about it.

May 7, Monday
We started another week of school today. Nothing really unusual happened at school today. It was just another Monday. We did have speed test in typing today. I got my Boy's Life today in the mail. Since Friday is Field Day and there will be no classes that day, many of the teachers who had things that they would have done on Friday being done on Thursday. I went to scouts tonight. We played volleyball. I watched the game between the U.S. and the Soviets, tonight. It went into overtime. The U.S. won 89 to 80. They lead the series 4 to 1. They play one more game.

May 8, Tuesday
We have a test in Algebra II tomorrow. We started a tournament today in badmitten. My partner and I won. We had a test in Chemistry today to see who is going to get the award in Chemistry. It does not count as a test for a grade. I didn't finish the test. We had a problem in typing for a test today. I got a letter from Peggy today. She said she is going to go to Augusta College next year. She and a friend of hers, Wanda, are going to live in Peggy's grandmother's house. I also got a letter from Georgia Boys State. I got my history term paper back to keep today. He decided not to make a book out of them. I started a letter to Peggy.

May 9, Wednesday
Our test in Algebra was postponed today. We will take it tomorrow. I gave my thing about what I thought the essay meant in Lit. today. We won in badmitten. I am going to bring my own racket tomorrow. We have our last test of the year in history tomorrow. I have to give the meaning of my section tomorrow in Chemistry. Jesse got a 1967 Mustang today. It is dark blue and has three-on-the-floor. It looks pretty neat. I finished my letter to Peggy today and mailed it on the way to Church. I hope she gets it tomorrow. We went to Church tonight. After school, Dwight and I went down to Georgia Sporting Goods and Dwight got me a paddle. It's a real good paddle.

May 10, Thursday
We had a test in Alg. II today. I have no idea how I did on it. One of the guys on the team we were supposed to play in badmitten wasn't there today so the Coach (Coach Edson) played in his place. We still won, but the game didn't count. I brought my own racket today. I think it is a lot better. We had an open book test in history today. We only had 30 minutes and nobody finished it. We will get to finish Monday. I gave my talk on my section today in Chemistry. Jesse came over and gave me a ride in his new car. We played a little basketball at the school. We played some ping pong today. We played doubles and singles.

May 11, Friday
Today was Field Day at Glenn Hills. We went through events all day. We broke some of ours in half to make it look like more. We ended up with 16 ribbons out of 18 events. We won about 12 or 14 legally. At the end of the day they called the homerooms to bring their flags to the office so they could count the ribbons. They gave us credit for 16. We still only came in second. It was a fun day though. We (the whole family) got an invitation to Peggy's graduation on May 29 at 8:00. I played a lot of ping pong today. Marlene came over and watched some films. Boyd Curry was here too. Today has just been a great day. Our class was called Utley's Mutleys '04. I took my suit to the cleaners.

May 12, Saturday
Today was mostly just another Saturday. This morning we cleaned the house. This afternoon we went and cleaned the back room of the Reading Room. We just waxed the floor. Someone had already cleaned the front room for us. After we finished the Reading Room, we went and cleaned the Church. On the way home I picked up my suit. Then, before going home, we went and got something at McDonald's to eat for supper. I didn't do much else except read the first part of a play and read my lesson. I hope Peggy brings her annual tomorrow so I can sign it.

May 13, Sunday
We went to Church as usual. We had seven students in our Sunday School class today. I asked Peggy about her annual and she said she forgot it. We went to the Camelot Room of the Quality Motel and had supper this afternoon. It was real good. We went there for the reason that today is Mother's Day. We watched a 50-year old ex-tennis professional [Bobby Riggs] beat the best lady player today, Margaret Court. We got out the ping-pong table and played some ping-pong. We only have 15 more days.

May 14, Monday
Today was the start of another week of school. I gave my book report in English today. We finished our test in History today. We then listened to a record by a guy who had been a gang leader in Harlem (N.Y.) and was now reformed. It was a very good record, what we heard of it. Even though I don't agree with all the things he said about people, I can see why he thinks that way. I went to scouts tonight as usual on Monday. Tonight I did a report for History which is due tomorrow.

May 15, Tuesday
We have a test tomorrow in Algebra II. We read some of part two in the play. It's a pretty good play I think. I brought my own racket in P.E. today. We didn't really play though. We saw a film today in history. We had an open book test in Chemistry. Dwight and I went out to eat today since Ronnie and Mom were going to a banquet. We had a good steak. Afterwards we went to the Hallmark place, but it was closed. We then went to K-Mart and got some cards to sent to Eileen, Peggy, and Jesse for grad.

May 16, Wednesday
We had a test in Algebra II today. During second period today, we had an assembly. It was for the students running for representatives of the 11th and 12th grades next year. There is seven running for next year Seniors and seven students have to be elected, so all of them will make it. We got two invitations to graduations today. One from Eileen Miller and one from Mary Stewart (our cousin). Mary also sent a picture of her with it. I found out what Post is sponsoring us. It is #63. I also found out that we are invited to dinner the 29th, where our pictures will be taken for the paper. It is at 7:00. I was planning to go to Peggy's graduation at 8:00 the same evening, but I guess I will have to go to the dinner instead. I would really rather go to Peggy's graduation. We went to Church tonight and ate at Dairy Queen on the way there, since Mom had to go to a banquet.

May 17, Thursday
We got back our test in Algebra II today. I made a 49. I couldn't believe it. We had a change today in P.E.; we played softball. We saw some movies in History and listened to the Senate hearing of the Watergate. I think it is starting to get so that everyone is sick of Watergate. We also saw a film in Chemistry. I got a G.C.A. newsletter today in the mail. My membership has run out, but somehow I still get it. I think I better renew it. We played some Ping-Pong today. I have heard from Jesse and others that we will be getting our annuals tomorrow. I hope so.

May 18, Friday
We got our annuals today. By the time the annuals were finished being given out, we had already missed first period. So starting with second period we signed annuals the rest of the day, except in typing. Mr. Howell wasn't there and we had to do our assignment. The annuals are pretty good, but they left out a lot of Juniors, Soph., etc. pictures including mine. We didn't like that too much. Of course I didn't really like my picture anyway, but it's the principle of the thing. I got my Chess Life and Review today. Al Blanchard came over and played ping-pong today. I went with Jesse and bowled tonight. I didn't bowl too good. I had a 116 and 108. I quit after that. We stopped by McDonalds afterwards.

May 19, Saturday
Today was another Saturday before school ends. We have one more Saturday before exams. Ronnie had to keep the Reading Room today. Dwight had to distribute the literature. I had to clean the church. We took Ronnie to the Reading Room at 12:30. Then we went to the Church where Dwight got the literature together and I cleaned the Church. I tried to remember all the things Ronnie does, but I don't know if I did or not. We picked up Ronnie at 3:00 after we finished our stuff. Jesse came over for a while today. I am going to take my annual to church tomorrow.

May 20, Sunday
Today was Sunday so we went to Church. Dwight overslept so he didn't go to Sunday School. Mom picked him up after Sunday School. I brought my annual to Church today. I got everyone that I wanted to sign it, except Eileen. Peggy wasn't at Sunday School, but she did come to Church, so I got her to sign it. I thought I was suppose to keep the nursery, but I found out that they changed me to next Sunday. I didn't get a chance to tell Peggy that I wouldn't be able to make her graduation the 29th. We only have 10 more days left of school this school year. Peggy only has two more. We picked up Grandmother, who had gone to Boston, late tonight and took her home. I'm getting to sleep about 1:00.

May 21, Monday
Today was the start of another week. We only have one more week after this one. I brought my badmitten racket to school again today. We started over our study sheet in History today. Today in typing Mr. Howell have us some time to sign annuals. Today after school, I got ready my thing for Boys State and a card for Peggy. Then I went and mailed them. On the way back, I went to the Hallmark cards place and got a small graduation book for Peggy. I didn't tell Mom I went there, because I was just suppose to mail the letter to Boys State (I didn't tell her I sent a card to Peggy, too). I went to scouts tonight. Robert Linton got a puppy today which his father brought over.

May 22, Tuesday
Today was Honors Day at Glenn Hills. We were suppose to miss first period and we did. After the program was over, we went to our second period class. Then the Junior High went for their Honors. We went over the last 50 or so words of the 75 we were given. Both assemblies lasted pretty long and by the time the Junior high finished, we had already missed third period. So we went to 4th period. We were a little over 30 minutes late for 4th period. So they had to change the lunch schedule around. Because of lunch we didn't miss any of it. We missed a lot of 5th period because of it, though. In typing we had speed test. I was able to play some Ping-Pong today.

May 23, Wednesday
Today we took our book cards around so the teachers could check our books and make sure we had the right books. In Algebra II, we filled out an evaluation sheet on Miss Fowler, our student teacher in Algebra II. We had a test in P.E. today on badmitten. We saw a film strip in chemistry. I received a letter from Peggy today. She said that she is going to be salutatorian of her class. She also said that she is going to be a counselor at camp this summer. She is going to Florida the week after she graduates. I got my book ready to send to her tomorrow morning. She was disappointed that I couldn't come to her graduation. I got a telephone call from the American Legion to go to the dinner Tuesday.

May 24, Thursday
Today was just another school day. The same old usual things happened. Like we had to have 126 things done on our study sheet in History. We still have 6 more days of school. Only 3 full days. I wrote Peggy a letter today. I will send it off in the mail tomorrow. I told her all the things that I couldn't fit in the back of the book I sent her. I had only one of my envelopes left and five sheets of my paper to go with it. Somehow I used exactly five sheets. I will really miss seeing her graduation. I have over 50 signatures in my annual. I still have to get a few more.

May 25, Friday
Today was the end of the last full week of regular school days. We only have one more week left. I sent off my letter to Peggy today. She should have gotten my graduation book I sent her. We had a test in Algebra II today. The first two days next week will probably be review days, except in P.E. and maybe Typing. I played some Ping Pong today. I am not exercising enough, so I am going to have to start doing something besides play ping pong. I need to get in shape for the summer. I am not gaining any weight, but I haven't been running very much.

May 26, Saturday
Today was just another Saturday. We cleaned the church today as usual. We did the usual things we do on Saturdays. Debbie came by and sold us tome donuts as usual. She hasn't come the [for?] several weeks though. This might be her last time till next year. We got out the Ping Pong table today and played some ping pong. I hope Peggy brings her annual tomorrow to Church so I can sign it. I am going to bring mine again so she can look at it. She should have gotten my letter today.

May 27, Sunday
We only have five more school days left, three of which are exam days. I brought my annual to Church today. I got Eileen to sign it. Peggy wasn't there today. I think the reason she wasn't there was that Waynesboro High School probably had their baccalaureate service today. It was my week to keep the nursery. I was suppose to keep it with Mrs. Granade, but if Peggy had her baccalaureate services, her mother was there. I didn't mind because there was only one in there. I don't know if I will make Church next week because I have to leave next Sunday for Boys State. I cut out the announcement telling the graduating Seniors of Waynesboro High to send to Peggy. We played some ping pong today. I got two new pairs of shoes, one pair of tennis shoes and a pair of street or school shoes.

May 28, Monday
Today was Memorial Day because of the Monday Holiday Bill. It was a day of reviewing in all classes except P.E. and typing. We didn't do any reviewing in Chemistry either because Mrs. Carter wasn't there. We took our P.E. clothes and lock home today, since we aren't dressing out tomorrow. We played basketball today for  the whole period again. It gets pretty tiring. I got Mrs. Foreman to sign my annual today. Mr. Black is the only one of my teachers who I haven't gotten to sign it yet. I went to Scouts tonight. We talked about the car wash this Saturday. Tomorrow night I have to go to the Boys State dinner. There was a fire around 11:00 p.m. right beside the Johnson's house. On the way back from it, a half an hour or an hour later, I saw two groups who had first gotten some records from the B.B.Q. [radio station WBBQ] car. Both of them gave me their records because they didn't want them. There are two records.

May 29, Tuesday
Today was the last full day before exams. I have Alg. II and English tomorrow. We got the last issue of The Spartan today in homeroom. It was the sixth issue this year. At the beginning of the year, I paid $2.00 for a subscription to it. They only had 6 instead of 8 issues. I lost 50¢ by buying a subscription. I told them at lunch about it and they said there was nothing they could do about it. Tonight at 7:00 o'clock I went to the dinner at the S and S Cafeteria on Walton Way. All the guys going to Boys State were there and also there were girls there who are going to Girls State. Post 63 sponsored about 8 or 10 guys, I think. First we eat [ate] and then they told us more about it. We will take a bus Sunday, June 3rd, to Atlanta. The girls are going to Athens (University of Georgia). They are going by some of their parent's cars. The boys got a bus ticket to Atlanta and back. They also gave us $5 spending money. We will leave on a Greyhound bus at 10:30.
Peggy's graduation was tonight. She is Salutatorian.

May 30, Wednesday
Today was the first day of exams. I had Algebra II and English. I made a 72 on my Algebra II exam. I got a letter from Peggy today. She said that her sister, Jane, had a baby boy Thursday. It weighed 9 lbs. 8 1/2 oz. She said that every time someone comes, takes them and shows them the baby. They named him Arthur Lawton Hickson IV and Peggy thinks they will call him Al. I went and got some new envelopes. They are quiet thoughts ones, too. It has a picture of either a setting or rising sun. It is orange.
I started a Friendship Box #2 today. We went to church tonight. I gave Eileen the card from Steve Cruz we got yesterday from him for Eileen. Eileen gave me the two nice stamps on it.

May 31, Thursday
I had my second two exams today. They were P.E. and History. I found out that I made a 90 in P.E. and an 86 in History. Tomorrow I have Chemistry and Typing. We tried to find some doctors, so I could get a physical exam, but we couldn't find any. Maybe we will find one tomorrow. I wrote a letter to Peggy today. I am going to mail it tomorrow. She should get it Saturday. If she has left for Florida then she will get it when she gets back. I don't know what day she will be going. She didn't mention anything in her last letter about it. I brought the chess set to school today and played some chess. I played some ping-pong today with Jerry and them.

June 1, Friday
Today was the last day of school. I had Chemistry and Typing. They were both hard, especially Chemistry. I am glad to be out for this school year. I got a whole summer before starting again. I sent off my letter to Peggy today. She should get it tomorrow. I was able to play one game of chess at school today. After a lot of asking I finally found a doctor who would take me. It was a doctor who had been in Southgate and moved to Peach Orchard Plaza. It cost $8 [or $18?].  Mom paid me back. I am glad to get that out of the way. I ran 10 times around the block (5 miles). On the 10th time I stopped and talked to some of the football players in a car. They asked me about playing chess.

June 2, Saturday
Today Ronnie had to keep the Reading Room this morning. Dwight did the Literature dist. I cleaned the Church by myself. Dwight kept the Reading Room in the afternoon, so after I finished the Church, I went home with Ronnie. When I got home, I went to the Boy Scout car wash and helped wash cars. When I got back from that, I started packing. After I found out what I needed, I went with mom and got it. I got two pairs of blue jeans: one blue and one wine color. I got a shirt to match each one. I also got four pairs of socks. I finished packing (almost) when I got home. Now I'm going to sleep.

June 3, Sunday
I went to Sunday School for half a day. Peggy and us three were the only ones there in our class. I had to leave at 10:00 to go to the bus station. It was a nice trip up here (about 2 1/2 hours). We registered when we got here. I am in Madison County, Talmadge city, room 14 in 2 Woodward. We got organized and set up tonight. The meals are pretty good. We can go back for seconds. We went to a devotional tonight. It was pretty good. We went to orientation tonight. We should have a lot of fun. We had party elections tonight. I was elected chairman of the Federalist Party.

June 4, Monday
We have had a lot of fun today. After breakfast today we went to an assembly about city government. We had a mayor and a city manager come talk to us. In a city manager type government they have a mayor, too. The mayor and city council do the policy of the city and the city manager carries out the policy. In a regular type with just a mayor and council, they do both policy and administration. We elected city officers today. In the afternoon after Party Campaigns we had athletics. The Federalist of our city (Talmadge) won in both Track and Volleyball. The Nationalist lost in volleyball. Our city is tied for second.
We had devotional this evening after supper. We had our city pictures taken this morning. This evening we paid for one if we wanted one. Everybody but one got one.

June 5, Tuesday
Today like other days was a busy day. After lunch we had two guys speak to us about county government. After we finished that meeting the different counties had county meetings of each party. I was elected chairman of the Federalist in Madison County. We also saw a film on the Naval Academy after the county officials talked to us. After lunch, we held county elections. After the elections, we had sports. We had two baseball games. We won both of them. The Nationalists of our city lost both of their games. We are still tied for second. We had devotional as usual tonight. We also found out who was elected to what post. I played a few games of chess today. I lost the two I played against a guy I met yesterday.

June 6, Wednesday
We heard Ben Fortson, Secretary of State today. He was a really good speaker. I think he is the best one we have had so far. After he was finished we heard two guys from the Civil Service Commission. After that we went straight to the Dining Room because we were a little late for lunch. After lunch there was a briefing on the U. S. Air Force Academy. I didn't go because I was instructed to go help the state party determine how many candidates qualified for each position. We found so many duplication[s] (people who signed more than one petition for each office) that we won't have any candidates for the Department of Labor. None of the three made it. All athletics for the day was cancelled because of rain. After dinner we had devotional services. Our two guests from the State General Assembly didn't come so one of the directors told us about it. We split into parties and had campaign speeches. I got to play some ping pong today. Today was the shortest day so far.

June 7, Thursday
We (Talmadge City) got up today and went out and did our exercises. We showed up everybody and also woke them up. This morning we heard a speech from Lt. Governor Lester Maddox. He was really good. He had a limp from falling off a bicycle riding up Stone Mountain backwards. Then we heard some more about the Airforce and Army R.O.T.C. Then we had State General Elections. We had the Primaries this morning. We had a good devotional tonight. We had a guy from the F.B.I. speak to us tonight, too. Then they announced who won the elections. Our counselor, George Cook, went out and bought 6 pizzas and cokes for our city. We each paid him a dollar before he left. We had it because George is leaving tomorrow. We also got our pictures tonight. Tomorrow is the last full day here.

June 8, Friday
Today was the last full day of Boys State. When I woke up I had a stomach ache or some thing, that I knew shouldn't be there. After breakfast, we went to the State Capitol. Mr. Carter, the Governor, wasn't able to make it, so he had one of his aides give his speech. Only the guys elected to state offices had to do things at the state capitol. The rest of us just wandered around the capitol. When we got back, my stomach decided that it didn't want to feel so bad, so it rid itself of the unwanted objects. After that my head started hurting and feeling dizzy. I went to the Allstar baseball game, which was cancelled after 3 innings because of rain. They played a basketball game, instead. I didn't watch the swimming meet. I finally overcame my problem just before devotion started at 7:00. We also had a seminar on drug abuse. I was very grateful for the healing I had.

June 9, Saturday
I felt better than I have felt in a long time today. It felt like the summer was over and we were ready to go back to school. We had the final ceremony and then we were finished. We finally got a ride to the bus station. The bus left at 10:00. We got a bus that made an indirect route to Augusta. Somehow we ended up going through Athens. The bus trip took 5 1/2 hours, but I didn't mind at all. We were thankful to be going home. At the Atlanta bus stop, before leaving, I bought a pennant, a book of a bunch of weird writings, and a souvenir folder of Atlanta. When I got home, I found out that we had gotten a thank you note from Peggy, I had gotten a letter from Peggy, and my report card. I hung up my pennant and a thing I got in the capitol yesterday that says, This is Maddox Country. I covered the thing for the second reader to stand on, too. Secretariat won the Triple Crown today.

June 10, Sunday
Today was Sunday so we went to church. We [missing word] the thing for the second reader to stand on to Church so they could use it. At Church, Grandmother gave us some things to give to Mrs. Jane Hickson. We weren't able to give it to her today though. I found out that I had gotten the second Vol. of The Practical Handyman's Encyclopedia yesterday in the mail. If I hadn't mentioned anything about not knowing why I hadn't gotten the second volume, I might not have gotten it. I found out that they had thrown away the box with the bill on the outside. I got it with the other stuff out of the trash bag. Tomorrow we will deliver the things to Jane and if I find out when Peggy is coming back, I will send her the souvenir folder I got for her.

June 11, Monday
Today was my first real day of summer. I relaxed a lot today, at least it was like relaxing after last week. A lot of the people told me that my mother must be putting me to work today. All I did was cut the hedge and pick up all the trimmings. Mom baked some cupcakes for the Boy Scout court of honor. I had to go get some cake mixes for her so she could make them. I dropped by the Hallmark Cards place and picked up a card that says, "Hi.". Mom didn't know I stopped there. We had a court of honor tonight. It was pretty good. I got my 6 year pin. We had skits at the beginning of it.

June 12, Tuesday
Today was a good day. I planted some tomato plants out by the little house. Hopefully they will grow. Ronnie and Dwight finished painting mom's other closet. This afternoon I delivered the things Grandmother gave us to give Mr. and Mrs. Lawton Hickson. Of course, I called them up before I went over there. Lawton was home and I did get to see the new baby, Al. I just happened to ask when Peggy was coming back from Florida. Jane said that she didn't know and that her parents were trying to find out, too. They think she will be back today or tomorrow. I stopped by the Post Office on the way back and mailed the souvenir folder to Peggy's house. While I was gone, I got a telephone call from some girl. I never found out who it was or why she called. She didn't call back. We got a call from dad tonight. He is in Atlanta now. Sometime near the end of this month we will go see him.

June 13, Wednesday
Today was a good day like all these days have been. I mailed the card that I got for Peggy Monday, today. I told her a little about Boys State, but not much. The card has a guy plugging in a plug. When you open it, you see a sign lighted up saying "Hi". This afternoon I set up the lesson for mom. I also set up the horseshoe post and played some horseshoes. Tonight we went to Church. I gave the first lecture [testimony] that I have ever given. I gave it about the problem I overcame Friday at Boys State. I didn't exactly give it perfect, but they understood what I was talking about.

June 14, Thursday
Today I mowed the lawn. It was real hot today, up in the 90's. Peggy should have gotten my card today. I need to write her a letter and tell her about Boys State and what I thought of it. I think I have given her a good idea of what it was like, but I like to show my feelings about things. I got out the horseshoes and played some today. I played Ronnie about six games. I won three and he won three. Jesse came over tonight for a while.

June 15, Friday
Today seemed different than most Fridays. Ronnie and Dwight decided to move the television up stairs in the living room. First we decided to fix the antenna. We bought a new antenna wire. Then I told Ronnie that I thought he would need a new control wire, too. We finally got a new one. We took the antenna down and worked on it just about all afternoon. After we tried it in the living room, it worked good. The antenna even worked. Charles, Jesse, and Greg were over. We played Password and some Stockmarket.

June 16, Saturday
Today was the day to clean the church. Ronnie had to keep the Reading Room. Dwight thought that he had literature distribution today but he didn't. Dwight helped me with the Church. Robert was over tonight and Ronnie and Dwight put the grounding wire in. It has been thundering and lightning last night and this afternoon. Tonight I wrote a letter to Peggy. I hope she is at Church tomorrow. I wrote all about Boys State. I wrote it on that weird paper I bought in Atlanta and hope she likes it.

June 17, Sunday
We went to Church as usual today. Peggy wasn't at Sunday School, but she did come for Church. She had to keep the nursery. Jane brought both of her little ones. I gave Peggy the letter I wrote yesterday. I found out that she isn't going to be a counselor at camp this summer. She said she went to Florida instead. We went to Dad's today. He has a split level like ours. His is bigger, though. He lives in Jonesboro. We went fishing, I didn't catch any, but I had a lot of fun.

June 18, Monday
Dad's house looked pretty good to me. He has wall to wall carpeting throughout his house, of course he doesn't have it in the bathrooms. He has an intercom system. He is having a fireplace built into the wall in his den. He is the first family to move into that future subdivision. He has the right to use a private lake. He has a 14 foot boat. Electric motors are the only ones allowed on the lake. We went fishing again tonight. This time I did a little better. I caught one fish.

June 19, Tuesday
Today was our second full day at Dad's house. We had fun playing with their dog and watching television. Dad came home and took us up and got us ID cards. Mine is good till my birthday in 1977, the same time my driver's license runs out. My picture on it isn't as bad as my drivers license, but it still isn't as good as I might have hoped for. It gives me all military privileges, except commissary. We went fishing again tonight. We caught 14 fish. I caught 6 of them. It rained and we got pretty wet, while fishing.

June 20, Wednesday
Today was the day that we had planned to leave and go home. We decided to stay another day. So Dwight called up Mom and asked her if it was alright to stay another day. When Dad got home, we went to the Depot and went bowling. They only had six lanes. We were the only ones there so we got two lanes. I bowled two games between 120 and 130. We went fishing again tonight. Something happened to my reel, so I had to use some plain line and a bobber with a worm. I didn't catch any.

June 21, Thursday
Today is the first official day of Summer. Today was our last day of staying at Dad's. After a pretty good day, we left right after supper, which was about 15 till 6:00, 5:45. I drove home. Before we left, Dad said that it looked funny to see me driving. We hit some rain on the way back. We had to stop and get gas on the way, too. It feels good to be home, even though we has a lot of fun there. When I got home, I went out and started playing horse shoes.

June 22, Friday
Today was a real good day. I played some horseshoes today. The main thing is that I got a letter from Peggy. It has a beautiful stamp on the outside about the Postal Service. I don't have the stamp, but I'm going to leave it on the envelope. She said that she like the stationery that I wrote my last letter on. She told about the great time she had in Florida. She said that she has orientation at Augusta College Wednesday. She will pre-register then. Tonight Charles came over and we saw the move, at Southgate, "Hyjacked". It was a real good and funny movie. I never expected a movie about hyjacking to be so funny. During the day, Boyd and Jesse were here.

June 23, Saturday
Dwight had to keep the Reading Room today. Ronnie and I cleaned the church when we took him down. Today is Ronnie's birthday. I wrote a letter to Peggy today, which I will give to her tomorrow. On the way back from picking up Dwight, I got Ronnie a birthday present, three tennis balls. We had a birthday dinner for Ronnie tonight. We went and saw the Atlanta Symphony on the grounds of Augusta College. They were really good. Before we left I was thinking of calling Peggy to see if she wanted to go, but I didn't. Now I know that I should have. Jesse happened to come by just before we left and he went with us. Dwight got a weird poster from Landlubber Clothes.

June 24, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so we went to Church. Ronnie wasn't able to stay inside because he is overage. Peggy didn't come to Sunday School but she did come to Church with Jane. I kept the nursery with Mrs. Epps. After Church, I gave Peggy my letter. We had a lot in the nursery today. We were invited to the Evatts today at 4:00. I called Peggy about an hour before, but she was at her grandmother's. About 6:00, I called from the Evatt's. I found out that she had called me, but couldn't get me and she had gone back to Waynesboro. At the  Evatts we saw our cartoons and the graduation of Dwight and Marlene. We talked Marlene into coming with us. There were seven of us: Boyd, Charles, Dwight, Jesse, Marlene, Ronnie and me. We bowled four games. I bowled a 123, 125, 149, and 148. Ronnie paid for three of everyone's games with the $10 he got from Dad for gas. We had a lot of fun. I wish we could have gotten Peggy. Marlene might have liked to have another girl along. We showed Marlene how to bowl pretty good. She had a lot of fun.

June 25, Monday
I got up a little earlier today. I mowed the grass today. It needed it. We are still getting the house in shape. Boyd and Jesse came over today. We started throwing two frisbees at once in the house and then we went outside. While running full speed and catching a frisbee, I ran into the picnic table. I tried to jump on it and I did a little, but still it wasn't the best jump in the world. After I caught the frisbee, I only had about three feet. One leg made it and one missed. It didn't hurt me too much. I played Ronnie some horseshoes today. I didn't play too good. He won the first three games and I won the fourth. Today was Monday so I went to scouts. It rained, so there weren't many there. I collected dues for the first time this month. I didn't come but one other time this month. That was the court of honor meeting. I missed one because of Boys State and one because I went to visit my dad. We all got up and gave a little talk on something. Tomorrow Ronnie is having new brakes put in the car.

June 26, Tuesday
Today is Dwight's birthday. Ronnie and Mom went down to Sears to get new brakes put in. They left it there and came back in the Datsun. I played some horseshoes with Ronnie today. He beat me three games and I won the fourth. I didn't play too good till the last game. When we went down to pick up the car, we stopped at Belks, then when we got down there we were early, so we went into Sears. Mom taught Dwight how to drive the Datsun, so he took his first try in it on the way down. Ronnie first drove it within the last 2 or 3 days, too. They left in the Datsun and left Ronnie and I to pick up the car. Ronnie and I got together and got Dwight a couple of rolls of 8mm film. We had a birthday dinner tonight. When Ronnie and I picked [up] the car we also got a car top carrier. I put it together to see how it works. I found out how it goes together, but still can't see how it is going to work. Dwight and Mom went to see the movie Camelot. They said that it was a good movie. I could have gone with them but I didn't go. According to the last letter I got from Peggy, tomorrow she will have orientation at Augusta College. She will also have to pre-register for the fall quarter.

June 27, Wednesday
Today we, Dwight and I, put the car top carrier on the car. We put the 4 cots on it and tightened it to see how it is going to work. I think that it will work good. The only thing is that, nothing else will be able to be put up there because there is not enough room. Today is Wed., so we went to Church tonight. We took off the boxes before we left. On the way down every time I got to 30 or 40 the car top carrier on the car made a real weird whistle. After Church, we talked to Marlene. She wants us to write her, too. Dwight said that he had her address somewhere, so she did not give it to us. She also said if we could get some weird stamps to put on it, she would like it since she collects stamps. When we got home, I tried to see how the public address system works on the radio. When I first tried it, I plugged it in the wrong place and music started coming out of the microphone. I went around the block with it. I found Jesse and some other guys. I stayed with them a little while. According to Peggy's letter she had her orientation and pre-registration today.

June 28, Thursday
The main think [thing] I did today was shampoo the rug. Mom went over it real good with the vacuum cleaner. We ran out of shampoo once, so Ronnie went out and got more. Ronnie also made a trip to the bank and cashed his and our checks. He went to the Post office and got a sheet of 6 cent stamps and a sheet of 8 cent stamps. He also went and turned some film in to be developed. He also brought us some food from McDonald's on the way back from getting the stamps. The rug looks real good where we did it. We did all of it except the dining room. I finished it in the afternoon when grandmother came. Tonight we spread the old rug, that was in Mom's room, out on the patio. It rained for about two hours tonight. The rain is going to wash the dirt on the rug instead of the patio. We are going to have to do something about the air conditioner before it gets nothing left under it to hold it up and falls down the slope. We may have to do it before we go on our trip. We would not want to come back and find it messed up because of our neglect to do anything about it.

June 29, Friday
The main part of cleaning the house we did today was to shampoo the dining room rug. The whole rug looks real good now. Hopefully it will stay that way till we leave on our trip. Mom hopes that we will be able to leave next Thursday on the 5th of July. She hopes to get her pay check Monday in the mail. She got the check from the army. She hopes to be able to pay most of the bills with it. That would mean that she could take most of her pay check with us. We are going to start cleaning the downstairs tomorrow. We will finish it on Monday if we are lucky. It will take us a few days to get everything packed. Jesse came over and played me a game of horseshoes. I won of course. Greg Cruey [?] came over and wanted me to pass him off on semaphore.  I found out that he did not know it too well. I gave him a sheet to study the Morse code with. He learned it and I passed him off. Dwight and Ronnie got out the ping-pong table and played some ping-pong today. I played Greg Cruey a game of horseshoes. I won against him. He only scored three points and that was on a ringer. I played Dwight a few games of ping-pong. He won them all. Dwight, Queenie and I went up on the hill and looked at all the lights of Augusta and beyond. We have to clean the church tomorrow. Ronnie has to keep the Reading Room all day while I clean it.

June 30, Saturday
Today was Saturday, so we cleaned the Church. Ronnie was supposed to keep the Reading Room today, but since Ronnie had to help clean the Church, Dwight kept it for him. We dropped Dwight off at the Reading Room then we went and cleaned the Church. It took us the whole time from 10:00 to 3:00 to do it, because of all the extras we did. Mom helped and told us what we had to do. We mopped and waxed the floors and washed the seats. After we finished we went and picked up Dwight and came home. Later on tonight, Jesse called and wanted to know if we were going bowling tonight. We didn't know, so we called up everyone and asked, then we called Jesse and told him we were. There were seven of us; Marlene, Charles, Dwight, Joun (John), Jesse, Ronnie, and me. We bowled three games this time. I did ok considering I changed balls 3 times in the first game. I was lucky to break 100. The second game I bowled a 127. The last game I bowled a 122 and I was high man that game. The best two games I bowled with a 10 lb. ball on the end lane, which I fell off a bunch of times. We had a lot of fun. On the way back we stopped at McDonalds and ate. When we came back home, Marlene found out that she had taken her wallet out of her pocket book and left her pocket book somewhere. We went back to McDonalds. Her purse was sitting on the counter. We got out the flood light and played with the frisbee in the road. Marlene's mother called her to come home. Everyone left then and went home. We have Church tomorrow.

July 1, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so we went to Church and Sunday School. When Church first started there were only two students in the whole Sunday School; Dwight and me. Later, about 15 minutes to half an hour, Melanie came in. Before Church, Peggy and George came. I talked to George a little bit. Someone brought to church an article from last night's Augusta Herald about Christian Science. It said that nobody under sixty is a member of our going-out religion. We were making jokes about not knowing we were that old yet. Peggy and Mrs. Tuer were supposed to keep the nursery, but Mrs. Tuer is out of town. Marlene stayed with Peggy in the nursery. The thing is there was nobody there to keep. I guess they just talked. After Church, I talked a little with Peggy's mother about our trip out West. I also talked with Peggy about not sending her but maybe one more letter this month. I told her I would sent all post cards instead. She might try to send me a letter before I leave. If she does she better send it quick. Today was our last Sunday at Church for a long time. Mr. Tuer outlined a route up and back for us. He even wrote down where we should stop at night. After Church, Grandmother and Grandfather took us out to Hornes to eat. Mr. Tuer also came with us. We had a real good meal. We went out and played with the frisbee today. I also played a couple games of horseshoes. Later on this afternoon we got out the ping-pong table and played some ping-pong. We got our new quarterlies today.

July 2, Monday
Today we started cleaning the downstairs. We did mostly the den. Then we went in the car and picked up most of the things mom wanted. The first thing we did was go to the bank. I found out that Ronnie had got the check from the Church yesterday at Church. We cashed that and then Mom withdrew $500 from Ronnie's savings account. She put that with her money and we got $1,200 in American Express travelers checks. Ronnie, Dwight, and I each got $200 in our names in twenties. Mom got the other $600 in her name in fifties. We then sent down to the Board of Education to see what she had to do to get 2 years tenure and be able to take off one-fourth of the expenses of our trip off her income tax. We went to Sears and got some things: tarpaulin, propane fuel, light timers, flashlight batteries and bulbs, film, etc. On the way back we stopped at K-Mart. We got some things there, too: flee collars, sweat suits, ping-pong balls, and gas cans. Then we went home. Today was Monday, so I went to Scouts. There weren't many there. This might be my last time there this month unless we come back early. After Scouts, I went to Roses. I went there to find an album I was in Sears a week ago, but wasn't at Sears today. It is by Ray Conniff and called, "You are the Sunshine of my life." I paid for a record for Robert, but he paid me back. The record I got is a real good record.

July 3, Tuesday
Today Ronnie and Dwight tried the tarpaulin on [the] car. They tied the four cots, a couple lawn chairs, and the card table in the tarpaulin and put it on the car. I cleaned the floor of my bedroom. Then Mom mopped and waxed it. I went out and played some horseshoes today. Jesse and Boyd stopped by for a while at the same time. One of our back tires seems to lose air sometimes. I hope it doesn't give us any trouble on our trip. Dwight and Mom got groceries. I took up the horseshoe poles and filled in the holes. I painted the poles and the horseshoes, too. I hope we will be able to pack all of our things tomorrow. I need to write Peggy a letter before we go.

July 4, Wednesday
Today was July 4th, Independence day. We had Grandmother and Grandpa plus Mr. Linton and Robert up for lunch. We had a big meal outdoors with steaks and those things. Ronnie and I went and cleaned the Church after that. At 4:30 we went over to Marlene's house for a barbe-que. Peggy and a friend of Marlene's were there. We played with the frisbee after eat[ing]. Somehow my shoe lost a heel, but I fixed it later. We came home and went to Church. Peggy and Marlene came to Church, too. Both of them gave testimonies. After Church we set up the tables and chairs for Sunday School. We gave our farewells to Peggy and Marlene. We stopped by the Linton's and gave them some bones for their dog. We came home and got my coin collection and stamp collection and took it to Grandmother's. Jesse stopped and gave us his farewell (he's leaving the last part of July). We did a lot of packing tonight. I told Peggy that I probably wouldn't see her for 4 or 5 weeks, but that she will hear from me.

July 5, Thursday
After we finished packing, we started our trip about 9:00. We took Queenie to the kennel. She didn't exactly like us leaving her there. Ronnie drove all the way to Atlanta. We had a near accident, but we were protected. Mom is keeping a list of all the things we spend money for. I bought two pennants today. One from Tenn. and one from the camp we are at. Mom took over driving later on and she had two near accidents right in a row. We are now in Kentucky. I got a post card from Tenn. I mailed it tonight. I got a souvenir folder that I will sent her tomorrow.

July 6, Friday
We went [to] Mammoth Cave today. We took a four and a half hour tour of the cave. It was really good. We got started on the road about 2:00 We didn't make much time. We went about 100 miles altogether. We were on the back roads of Kentucky and didn't make much time. When we did get on the interstate, we had a flat tire.  When we tried to put the spare on it had a bad rim where it had been bent. After two hours of work were were able to get it on. We stopped at a Gulf station and the guy was real nice. At first he thought we should get a new tire. Then he checked and fond that he had a slightly used tire that he got off a wrecked car and he suggested we get that. It really saved us a whole lot. We camped on the boarder of Kent. and Ill. I bought a Kentucky pennant.

July 7, Saturday
We got off to a good start today. We made it to St. Louis about 2:00. We met some people from Georgia there. We went to the Arch and took a ride to the top of it and saw the great sight. It was really a great view, St. Louis on one side and the Mississippi River on the other. We met the others from the Atlanta area and from Americus while we were waiting to go up in the Arch. We made it halfway to Kansas City. We stopped about ten miles west of Columbia, Missouri. We are going to to there tomorrow for Church. I went swimming for about 4 hours tonight. I had a lot of fun.

July 8, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so as usual we went to Church. We went back about 9 miles to Columbia, Missouri. Ronnie and Dwight went to Church with Mom. I went to Sunday School. It was really interesting. At a place near Blue Springs, Mo., about 5 miles outside of Kansas City, we saw a place called "Missouri Town 1855". There was no charge. They had buildings there from that period. They still had their original wood. It was really great. We are camped in a place just outside of Topeka, Kansas. It is a great place. I talked to a man that lives in Topeka. He is a postmaster or something like that. I had a nice talk with him. Later tonight I went swimming in the lake here. Mom called Grandmother tonight.

July 9, Monday
Today we took off from Topeka. We went a long way today. A lot further than any other day. We stopped at the Eisenhower Center in Abilene, Kansas. It was really great. We really enjoyed it very much. From there we drove all the rest of [the] way through Kansas. We stopped at three Stuckey's. At the first one I bought four pennants: Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. At the second one I bought one: Utah. At the third one I bought four: Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. That is nine pennants altogether. We stopped in Falcon, Colorado about 9 miles out of Col. Spgs. for the night after a hard time finding a campground.

July 10, Tuesday
Today we went into Colorado Springs. After asking around a little we were able to get to Gary Patrick's house. Gary was at work, but Jerry Tucker and Terry G. were still there. They were asleep, so we woke them up. They were surprised to see us. We took them to see some places. They had seen some of them already, but they enjoyed seeing them again. We went to see four main places: Garden of the Gods, Cliff Dwellers, Cave of the Winds, and Hall of Presidents. They were all good. I got a pennant from each one. I picked up a souvenir folder from Cliff Dwellings and a patch from Garden of the Gods. The order I listed the four places is the order we saw them in.

July 11, Wednesday
We weren't up as early as we planned. We had planned to get up, and pick up Jerry and Terry at 10:00 and go to Pike's Peak. We were only about an hour late. After being there and talking a while we decided to leave. Evelyn was there and she came with us. (She just finished watering someone's flowers when we got there.) We had a great time going up Pike's Peak. We stopped at the North Pole for a couple hours. We had a nice time there and I got a pennant. When we got to the top I got a pennant of Pike's Peak. We talked a lot when we got back to Gary's house. We ate supper there and we even stayed the night at their house. We stayed up real late and talked. Gary had to work in the morning so he went to sleep early. Terry went to sleep too. We didn't go to Church.

July 12, Thursday
Today we got up pretty early. We had some toast and milk before we left. We said our good-byes. Evelyn took some pictures of us before we left. We went to the Royal Gorge today. It was really something. It is the world's highest suspension bridge. After visiting there we went through Colorado's mountains. We are still in them. The mountains were really something. The mountain roads aren't the best, so we didn't make much time. We went to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. It is really great. The views into the canyon are great. We are camping in the campground of the Black Canyon. There was a camp-fire tonight to tell us about it. We are on the top of a mountain and it is really cold up here. I cashed my first traveler's check at Royal Gorge, Col.

July 13, Friday
Today was Friday the 13th. It wasn't too bad a day. When we left our campground, we stopped at a souvenir store. Dwight got some film and I got a pennant from the Black Canyon. It was their last one. When we got into Utah, I convinced them to go the way Dwight had planned instead of the interstate. We went through Capitol Reef National Mon. I got a pennant from there. I was driving and we got on a road that turned into a dirt road. We followed it a long way and finally turned back. It was extra rough and went up a mountain. Mom finally decided to go to the interstate. So we didn't take any of the cutoffs going south. We are camped in Richfield, Utah. Dwight and I went and saw two films about Morrisons at the campground. Oh, I cashed my second traveler's check in Thompson, Utah.

July 14, Saturday
Today we came down toward the Grand Canyon. We took a road out of our way to go and see Zion National Park. It was really good. I got a pennant of it and also another one of Utah, that was better and far more beautiful than the other one, at a place we ate at on the way out. We had to come back the same way we came. Then we went to the Grand Canyon. We had to go way around to get to the right entrance. It was really worth seeing. I got a pennant of the Grand Canyon and one of Arizona. It got pretty late before we found a place to camp. We camped near Williams, Arizona. *Done Sunday

July 15, Sunday
There weren't any Churches around so we had to skip Church this week. The reason I didn't write in the diary yesterday was because I couldn't find my pen. I found a bunch of other things under the seat, but not my pen. Since I couldn't find my pen I decided not to write. I still haven't found my pen, but I decided to use this one. We went over the Hoover Dam. I got a pennant of it. We traveled through Las Vegas and ate at a Kentucky Fried Chicken there. We went through Death Valley National Monument. It was real barren and pretty hot. We are camped near Lone Pine, Calif.

July 16, Monday
Today we started out as usual. We made it to Yosemite National Park. It has some really big trees. The thing I liked best about it was the big waterfall there. We spent just about [all] day driving around the place. I wasn't able to find a pennant of it anywhere. We did stop to eat at Tioga Pass. I got a pennant of Tioga Pass there. We were thinking of camping in the Nat. Park, but we didn't. We called Grandmother tonight. We are camped in a small town in Cal., Moccasin Point. I need to write Peggy a letter pretty soon.

July 17, Tuesday
We started out for San Francisco today. We ate breakfast on the way somewhere. I had a big serving of Pancakes. We went through San Francisco and Oakland. We went over the Golden Gate bridge. It was just about covered with fog. We came up Cal. highway 1, which runs along the coast. I picked up two Post Cards where we ate lunch. I wrote one to Peggy and I don't know who the other one is going to. We are camped at a KOA that was not listed in the campground book we have. We found out that it opened only 2 weeks ago. We went a played some pool in the rec. room with two guys. One from Cal. and one from Utah. We walked down to the Pacific earlier.

July 18, Wednesday
We started another day to see how close to Portland we could get. When we got to Leggett (in intersection of Cal. 1 and US 101) we went and drove through a tree. I picked up a pennant of it and one of the Cal. Redwoods. Next on our way we stopped at the Tree House. I got a pennant of it and the World's Tallest Tree. Then we stopped at Richardson Grove. We walked around and saw all the interesting trees. I got a pennant of that, too. The next thing we stopped at was Trees of Mystery. They had a thing of weird trees and Paul Bunyon and the blue ox. I got two pennants, one of it and one of Cal.; 7 altogether. A little later while Ronnie was pulling over to stop he ran into a ditch. Luckily a guy stopped and had a nylon rope and pulled us out. It didn't hurt the car too much except a little dent near the front. Oh, I picked up a real cute post card of cat and wrote it to Peggy. I mailed the other post card. We decided to stay in a motel tonight in Crescent City, Cal. We called Uncle Clifford and told him we would be there tomorrow. *Done Friday

July 19, Thursday
We started out for Portland today. We took 199 to the interstate instead of going up the coast. We probably missed a couple of things by not taking the coastal route, but that is the way it goes. Dwight wasn't feeling his best so we didn't go too fast till we got to the interstate. On the way, we stopped at a Stuckey's. I was lucky enough to find that they had pennants of Oregon. It was more expensive than almost all the other ones I have gotten, $1.05. Now I have 35 altogether I think. We got in about 7:30 pm. About an hour after we got in Grandmother called. Uncle Clifford got in from his second job about 3 am. He seemed happy to see me, since I was the first one he saw.  *Done Friday

July 20, Friday
Today was a pretty good day. When we got up this morning, Uncle Clifford showed us some of the interesting plants and trees around. Then he showed us all of his rocks. He really has some great rocks. He told us about some of the interesting things he has done. He took us down to his gas station this morning. It seems like they have a real gas problem in Portland. He had to go to work at his other job this afternoon. He isn't going to even open his station tomorrow. I found my pen in the car this afternoon. I did Wed. and Thur., which I wasn't able to get to then and now almost 6 hours later I'm doing today's. I [am] extra happy about finding my pen.

July 21, Saturday
Today we got up as usual and talked a little more with Uncle Clifford. He decided to take us to the places we could make that we had time for. First he took us to Multnomah falls. It is one of the highest falls there is; something like 5th. I got a pennant from there. Then we crossed the river up a ways and saw a museum. It had a bunch of real old things given to them by Kings and Queens. Then we went and saw a replica of Stonehenge. After that we went back into Oregon and went up to timberline lodge [on Mt. Hood] or. I saw a place where they sold pennants, but it was closed. Then we went home. It was about 11:00 or 12:00.  *Done Tuesday

July 22, Sunday
We got up pretty early today. We decided to go see Sea Lion Caves on the coast of Oregon. On the way we stopped at Florence and saw Sand Dunes Frontier. It was really great. We rode on a big dune buggy thing through it. I also got a pennant of it. Then we went to Sea Lion Caves. It was really a great place. We could just see the sea lions sitting on the rocks near the ocean. We went  down to the caves and saw the lions there, too. I got a real good pennant from there. Later tonight a friend of Clifford took us out for a ride. He had a 28 foot cabin cruiser. It was worth over $116,000 and had 340 horsepower.  *Done Tuesday

July 23, Monday
Today we got up and got ready to leave. Before we left, Uncle Clifford showed me his coin collection. He has a really almost complete collection. He didn't have much time so he just gave me a 1955s penny. He said that he would have given me more, but that he didn't have time. We followed him down to his station. He took a look at our car and said that we need new tires. He ordered the tires and then he took us to Estacada to see all the stuffed animals. It was a restaurant called the Safari Club. The guy also had a collection of gold pieces and silver dollars worth over $16,000. Cliff had to go to work at this other job before the tires came in. Beside the tires we also had a grease and oil change. Since it was about 6:00 we went and stayed at Uncle Clifford's another day.  *Done Wednesday

July 24, Tuesday
We took off from Portland real early about 7:00. We left before anyone else got up. We went to Washington and saw Mount Ranier. We stopped at Whistlin' Jack Lodge and ate. I got a pennant of the lodge, one of Washington, and a real small one of Mt. Ranier. The country up here is really nice. We made it all the way across Washington and into Idaho. We camped at a KOA just north of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. We played some pool and an ice hockey game. I tried to catch up my diary, but I just couldn't make it. I got two out of four done. Oh, I picked up a post card of some bears for Peggy. *Done Wednesday

July 25, Wednesday
We got a late start this morning. Before we left I [bought] two extra small pennants. One of Coeur D'Alene and one of Sandpoint (Pend Oreille Lake). I also got a pair of sunglasses. After a couple hours I finally was able to mail my letter to Peggy. Just over the border we stopped at a museum of stuffed animals. Mom decided that we should go to Church tonight, so we camped real early. We are camped at Kalispell, Mont. I picked up a pennant of Expo '74, which is from May 1st to Oct. 31, next year. We went to Church tonight in Kalispell. I finally caught up the diary.

July 26, Thursday
Today we started out for Glacier Nat. Park. We stopped at the House of Mystery. I got a pennant of it and two post cards. I wrote one, but I wasn't able to mail it till late in the afternoon. It might not go out till tomorrow. Right before we got to Glacier we missed a turn and didn't know it till we got to the other side, so we had to take the road going through toward where we came from. Before we went in on the east side I got a pennant of East Glacier Park lodge. I got one of Montana somewhere, it might have been at the house of mystery. I got a pennant of the park at a gift shop. We went on a boat ride on Lake McDonald. I got a pennant of Two Medicine Lake, there. We had to go through Kalispell before heading south. I now have 46 reg. and 3 extra small pennants.

July 27, Friday
We got off to a pretty good start this morning. We made it to about 10 miles from Yellowstone. The thing is, that it is not very crowded. We made real good time today. All except for the first 50 miles we have just about been on the interstate the whole time. We stopped about 5:00, since we knew we wouldn't make it all the way through Yellowstone. I tried all morning to find a mailbox, but couldn't. Around 2:00 I found one at Stuckey's, but forgot to mail my post card. At the camp I found the Post Office in the same building, so I mailed it there. We played a lot of pool tonight. We should be able to make it all the way through Yellowstone tomorrow. I met a girl the same age as me. She will be a senior this year, too. She worked at the campground. I talked with her a while.

July 28, Saturday
Today we went into Yellowstone National Park. It is the oldest Nat. Park in the United States and in my opinion the best National Park. We spent all day seeing it and the Grand Teton. Yellowstone had hot springs, geysers, waterfalls, parts of petrified trees, and best of all animals. While in Yellowstone I bought a little statue of Snoopy for Peggy that said "America Your Beautiful". I also picked up rocks. I got a pennant of Yellowstone. I also got a souvenir folder of Yellowstone. We went through the Grand Teton, too. The campsite we are at has a swimming pool, but I wasn't able to go swimming. I cashed a traveler's check today.

July 29, Sunday
Today we drove to interstate 80. On the interstate we made very good time. We stopped at a couple of Stuckey's stores, but I still wasn't able to get a pennant of Idaho. I sent the folder of Yellowstone off today. It won't get in the mail till tomorrow, since the only time it was picked up on Sunday is 6:30 am. We are camped at a United Campground tonight. We camped early again, but I still didn't go swimming in the swimming pool. They had a couple of films tonight that were pretty good. We are in Colorado. We didn't get to go to Church today. I cashed a traveler's check.

July 30, Monday
Today we got up early, but didn't get out to about 10:00. We went to Rocky Mountain National Park. It was a pretty good place. I got a pretty good pennant of the place. After we got through it, we went through Denver. It is a very crowded city. We went through Colorado Springs, but didn't stop to see the Patrick's house because it was raining. Mom wasn't feeling like she should have, so we decided to stay in a Motel. We drove all the way to New Mexico. We should be home sometime this week. I wrote a card to Peggy tonight that I picked up in Rocky Mt. Nat. Park.

July 31, Tuesday
Today we went over to Philmont and saw John [Jon] Tuer. He was just about to take a group on the trail. We were able to talk to him about 10 or 15 minutes while they waited for another group. I got a pennant of Philmont. we came a long ways today and are now in Oklahoma. We stopped in Texas and I got a pennant of Texas. We stopped at a live animal place in Oklahoma and I got a hat. I picked up [a] post card and wrote it to Peggy. Mom called Grandmother tonight. They had a pool where we are tonight, but by the time I was ready, it closed. We should be home Friday or Saturday. I cashed my 5th traveler's check.

Aug 1, Wednesday
Today we went into Oklahoma City. I mailed my post card this morning. We went to the Cowboy Hall of Fame. It was really great. We went all through it. Before we came out I got a pennant from it. It was a plain pennant, white. I have at least 50 (52) pennants now, maybe more. After Oklahoma City we kept on the interstate. At a Stuckey's, I picked up another pennant of Kansas. We are now camped about 50 miles from Little Rock, Arkansas. They had a swimming pool at the place we stopped at and this time I did get to go swimming. Ronnie and I played a game of pool tonight. It is real nice here, about like Georgia. I met a couple of girls from Kansas while in the pool tonight.

Aug 2, Thursday
Today we went into Little Rock. I was driving and missed my turns and had to go back a couple of times. We went down through Louisiana to I-20. We crossed the Mississippi River into Mississippi. I got a pennant of Louisiana in Mississippi. We went all the way through to Alabama. While we were still in Mississippi, Mom got a coonskin hat fro Robert and me. Before we left Mississippi, I picked up 6 more pennants, 5 real good ones. I got another one of Louisiana, another one from Texas, one from Alabama, one from Georgia, one from Mississippi, and a plain one from Arkansas. I got 59 regular pennants and three small altogether. When we got in Alabama and couldn't find a campground, we decided to go all the way in. Mom had problems in Birmingham, Ala. Like Little Rock, they don't tell when to turn off till the last second. Ronnie drove from Birmingham to Atlanta and I drove home from Atlanta. There was a thick fog all the way from Atlanta to Augusta. We got in about 4:00 am, so it is really Friday now, but it's still Thursday night. We went by the Ala. State fair.

Aug 3, Friday
Today we went and brought Queenie home. She was real happy to see us. Mom and I went and got the mail. Included in the mail for me was a souvenir folder of Walt Disney World from Peggy. Jerry came over and we went over to Ft. Gordon, where Dwight sent his films off to be developed. Later we went and picked up a package, which was my Handy Man's Ency., at the Post Office. Then we went down to Grandmother's, where I picked up my coins and stamps. Oh, right before we went to Ft. Gordon, the exterminator came and sprayed the house. We had to stay out for 3 hours. On the way back from Grandmother's, we got groceries. We watched the films we got and the one Dwight took and picked up today. It was double or triple exposed. Later we played cards. We are supposed to call our cousins and tell them to come down now. I got a thing from Whites telling me to come get my picture made, plus a lot more.

Aug 4, Saturday
Today I got up, it was Saturday. I got out the horseshoes and put up the poles. I played a little with them and then Greg Klein and I got out the ping pong table. I played a little with him. Then I played a few games with Dwight. Ronnie and I went down and cleaned the Church. They had a lot of things changed. They had some extension cords and I used them. Later tonight we bot out the movie projector and showed the movie films. We also showed Dwight's films. *Done Sunday

Aug 5, Sunday
Today was Sunday, so we got up and went to Sunday School. I wore my western hat and brought the present I got for Peggy. Today was George Granade's last Sunday in Sunday School. After Church, I gave Peggy the present I got for her. I was able to sit with Peggy in Church. I think most of the people at Church liked my hat. Tonight we, Boyd, Gary S. [Sexton], Jerry, Marlene, Ronnie, Dwight and I, went bowling. I didn't bowl too bad. I had a 134, a 153, and a 111. In the last game I had a 38 in the 5th. Afterwards, we went to Burger King and ate. We found out that our cousins from Pennsylvania are coming tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.

Aug 6, Monday
Today we started cleaning up the house. I guess we did alright. I went out and started playing horseshoes. Mike Lud. [Ludikowski] came by and I started playing him a game. When it was 13 to nothing my favor, Mike had to go open the door for his sister and he didn't come back. He made an interesting statement, though. He said, "If there was a horseshoes team at Glenn Hills, you'd be on it." I played Greg Klein a little and then showed him some tricks. I played him part of a game of football Strategy. I went to scouts tonight, since it was Monday. I got out the ping pong table for a very short time this evening, so Greg could play some of this friends. I played a little, too.

Aug 7, Tuesday
Today we finished cleaning up the house. We are expecting our visitors today. Mom and Ronnie took off to get groceries this morning. I changed the filter in the air-conditioner under Mom's orders. After I found the air-conditioner filter, I had a little problem about getting the door of the air-conditioner open to get out the old filter. We got out the ping pong table today, but it started raining and we brought it in. As soon as we got it in and dried stuff, they arrived. There was Aunt Barbara, Mary, Skippy, and Robbie. After the reunion, we got the ping pong table out again and played some. Later tonight we went over to Grandmother's house and saw her for a couple of hours. Mary is sleeping in Ronnie's bed, and Ronnie is sleeping in Dwight's bed, Dwight is sleeping in the little house. Skippy and Robbie are sleeping in the den on the fold-out couch. Aunt Barbara is sleeping with Mom. Mary called her friend Terry to tell him she had gotten here.

Aug 8, Wednesday
Today when I got up I discovered that the ping pong table had been left out all night and dew had set on it. I ate breakfast today. We played some ping pong today. Ronnie got out the hose and squirted everybody. Later this afternoon Grandmother came over to the house. She stayed a little while. This morning, I called Grandmother to see if I had left my hat at her place and I had. We went to Church tonight and I got it back. Tonight we showed the cartoons and another film that had been taken of them and us.

Aug 9, Thursday
Today started out as most of the past few days have. We spent the morning doing what we have been doing, whatever that is. This afternoon, we went to the Augusta College Rec. Area out at Clark Hill. Oh, right before we left, I typed a short letter to Peggy. I wasn't able to mail it though. We spent just about the whole afternoon there. At first, Mary didn't want to go, but we convinced her to go. Then she didn't want to bring her bathing suit, but her mother brought it for her. She went swimming of course. It was a lot of fun because there weren't many people there. Mary is very pretty and I told her that I would have voted for her for homecoming if I went to her high school, too. I told her that Tuesday. Tonight we went and played Putt-Putt. Greg Klein and Jerry went with Ronnie, Dwight, Mary, Skippy, Robbie and me. We had a great time. We played three games. The last game Mary didn't play, she just kept score.  *Done Monday, the 13th

Aug 10, Friday
Today we got up pretty early and went to Six Flags. We left pretty early, but we had a flat tire on the way. We were going along and it just busted. It was one of the brand new tires we got in Portland. At the same time our water in our radiator overflowed. We stopped at the nearest gas station and filled it up. A little later we got some radiator coolant. Six Flags was great. We went on a bunch of things, but the best of them all was The Great American Scream Machine, the largest rollercoaster in the world. I rode on it with Mary. It was really great. About 10 min. later we went on a thing called the spindle top. I got sick to my stomach. I have decided to never go on another ride where I go backwards. Six Flags was really great. The puppet show was great, too. On the way back we stopped at Stone Mountain. They really liked it. It was a great day. My letter to Peggy should have gone out today. Mary got a picture drawn of her that is really good at Six Flags. *Done Tuesday

Aug 11, Saturday
Today we got up pretty early and got ready to go to Clark Hill with the Curry's. (Just Boyd and his dad. His mother couldn't come.) We went up to the Augusta College Recreation Area. We brought food along with us. We went swimming and Dwight went skiing. Skippy and Boyd went skiing later. I play[ed] some games of Ping Pong. I won all the games I played except one. I lost one game out of three with Dwight. I just beat some good player by a couple of points. We went and cleaned the Church about 5 or 6. Mary came with us. She vacuumed the whole Church for me. I did some of Ronnie's jobs for him. Mary is really sweet. She is very nice. She has a few bad habits, but she makes up for them by being so nice. *Done Wednesday

Aug 12, Sunday
Today we got up and went to Church. Robbie came with us to Sunday School. Peggy wasn't there today. I learned later it was because of her car. Mary wore a very pretty dress. It was the first time I have seen her wear a dress. After Church Grandmother took us to the Camelot and we ate there. It was a real good meal. It was very nice to eat in a restaurant for a change. We went bowling tonight. We only had six people; Jerry, Marlene, Mary, Ronnie, Dwight, and me. I didn't bowl too bad. We went to McDonalds after we had finished bowling. It was  really a great day. Joe Lud. came by and we talked to him. Mary, Ronnie and I did, that is. We talked till about 1 or 2 o'clock. This afternoon Mom took them, all except Mary and us three, on a tour of Augusta. Mary and I played password.  *Done Thursday

Aug 13, Monday
Today we got up pretty early. They got all packed and all ready. Before they left on their journey back to Penn., we had all the picture taking. They were taking the pictures of us and Dwight took some pictures of them. He also took a picture of all of us with all of them together. He took a time exposure and got in the picture before it clicked. Then they got in their car and left. We didn't do much the rest of the day. I did go to scouts tonight. We talked about our campout this weekend.
I really enjoyed this past week while they were here. Of course, I have really enjoyed this whole summer. I got to know Mary pretty good and I think I might have found out a little more about girls, too. I tried to catch up in my diary, but I just couldn't make it. Oh, Mom and I went to the Goodyear place to get the tire exchanged.  The one on the Gordon highway didn't have it. So we went to the one on Broad St. At first they were going to charge Mom $11 but she talked them out of it. So we got it free of charge. Ronnie and I put it on.

Aug 14, Tuesday
Today was a day like some of the earlier days of my actual summer vacation. I didn't do much today. I practiced throwing horseshoes a little. I played a game of touch football with Greg Klein and friends. I was permanent quarterback. Mom was expecting a maid to come today, but she didn't come. We straightened out the house a little and got things back to normal. I got out in the sun for a while today. Tonight Dad called. He said that Monday he was coming to Augusta and staying out at Clark Hill. He wanted to know if we could come out for a couple of days. I tried to catch up today, but I'm still behind. Dwight got back some of his slides today.

Aug 15, Wednesday
Today we didn't do much. Ronnie had to keep the Reading Room. Mom went shopping when she took Ronnie down to the Reading Room. I started a real long letter to Peggy today. I haven't finished it. I got 10 pages done. I am splitting it into two parts. One on the paper with the weird figures and one on the bright paper. We went to Church tonight. It was pretty good as usual. We have a few new people coming to Church now. They are both moving to Augusta. I hope I will be able to finish my letter to Peggy tomorrow. Oh, I got a letter from Peggy today. She said that she didn't make it to Church because she was having trouble with her car. She said that her sister, Jane, moved around the Stone Mountain area and she is going to miss her.

Aug 16, Thursday
Today was a pretty interesting day. Ronnie went to work with a guy laying out a barn. I got up and finished my letter to Peggy. I had to put it in two different envelopes. I wasn't able to mail it today. It took me most of the morning to finish my letter to Peggy. Boyd came by this afternoon and took us to Augusta College to play ping pong. Tonight I played some horseshoes. Tonight, Jerry, Boyd, and Marlene came over and saw our slides. They came out pretty good. I finally caught up in my diary.

I just had enough time to take a shower and get ready. Peggy wasn't at Sunday School or Church. After Church we came home and went and got the tent and things. This afternoon we went and saw the movie called "The Sound of Music." It was an excellent movie. Marlene came with us and after the movie, we went and ate at the Sizzler.
